“I think when a private institution is being embarrassed and tainted by radical and inflammatory speech, the institution is the arbiter.”

So the Israeli press saying Gaza civilians are complicit in kidnapping Israelis is “radical and inflammatory speech”?

Exactly, the truth is not allowed.

However, stopping them from speaking is doing exactly what they are doing. Overcome them with the truth, not with censorship.

We’re talking about Harvard.

Where did you get the idea that Harvard was your public ‘Town Square’?

It’s a private institution/business; it can do what it likes in this regard.

Personally, I’m glad to see that it’s getting at least a little bit of sense.

So you are advocating that Harvard has to power to decide which speech is allowed and that is not allowed?

Wow, there's a current case where a man's right to free speech defense against accused rape was denied by the college (posted on FR several places). Per you because Harvard is private that is OK.

Universities have encouraged a culture of lawless, violent protests since the 1960s.

Celebrate revolutionaries like Castro, Mao, Che, Malcolm X. Question authority. Trust no one over 30. Riots are the voice of the oppressed.

Now they want to put the genie back in the bottle. Respect the rule of law. Obey authority.

Too late. This is the trash culture they have created and nurtured.

And the university should not be privileging one side.

Agreed.

But the university should not be shutting down debate.

Yes, Harvard has the right to prohibit an organization from holding an event on its property, and it has the right to suspend any organization that it finds is acting in a way that is antithetical to its mission.

If you want these folks to spout their venom freely and intimidate other students, invite them to YOUR house and let them do it there.

free speech has limits, and always has.

You are NOT and never have been free to threaten violence.

The line is crossed when a speaker makes a true threat. The Supreme Court has found such true threats are not protected free speech under the First Amendment.

Just declare war on Mexico. Kill a flock of birds with one stone. Stop the invasion, stop the fentanyl, stop the egress of lots of dollars. Plus get a lot of petroleum and a lot of coastal real estate.

Plus, all the Mexicans are up here in the US anyway. The place is deserted. Most people would cheer.

you make it sound like this is a case of a few people in a room sitting peacefully across the table from one another debating an issue. free speech is allowed to both sides, not just one calling for the killing of innocence... C’mon man, stop with the broken record routine...

“spout their venom freely”

And who defines venom? It seems you believe Harvard as an institution can. Which means if you don’t use the proper pronouns you are disallowed. Or if you are against abortion you can’t protest with pictures of aborted babies because that’s venom. A lawyer is disbarred because he questioned the 2020 election, more limits on free speech.

You cannot overcome irrationally with reason. You must use force. They operate in wold view that uses its own internal logic. they believe they have the true and are incapable of seeing their errors.
