Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law this week that ends teachers’ ability to abuse a book challenge law that was implemented to protect children from pornographic materials in school.
The law now significantly limits the ability of Florida residents who do not have children in the state’s education system to be able to challenge book titles.
“The idea that someone can use the parents rights and the curriculum transparency to start objecting to every single book to try to make a mockery of this is just wrong,” DeSantis said the day before the bill signing. “That’s performative. That’s political.”
DeSantis said that people did not want their time wasted by the leftists who were trying to get classic books banned.
“We don’t care about your performative efforts to try to make a name for yourself, that’s not appropriate,” he said. “So when you have some school administrators or teachers that are saying that somehow state law requires them to take classic books off the shelves, that is a lie. That is not true. That is depriving students of a valid education.”
“So I think that 90% of the things, I mean, when they would say that somehow, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ couldn’t be done when that was on the state’s summer reading list for the Florida Department of Education, don’t tell me Florida law says you can’t do that,” he said. “When they said you couldn’t do a book about Hank Aaron, when that was the Book of the Month for the Florida Department of Education, don’t tell us you can do that.”

Oops, your cutting into backpacker_c quota, he’ll get jealous you are posting news about Governor DeSantis. And, worse, without insulting him. /s
Imagine what this man could have done had he not wasted months of time and millions of dollars on a primary fight he had exactly zero chance of winning.

Should Donald Trump win this fall, I hope he gives Ron DeSantis a cabinet position.
I actually think Ron should be vp as people are looking for serious change.
If 45 does have to spend time in prison, God forbid, he could choose Ron and actually say Ron will be acting on my orders but will be in the forefront.
DeSantis was a much better presidential candidate. He could have actually won.
This sounds like taxation without representation.
yes, and no.
It’s like he is two different persons. As governor, he certainly looks and acts presidential. Does the right things for his state. As a candidate, he never resonated with the electorate, and instead of recognizing that Trump already had the people’s trust locked in, he schmoozed with anti-trumper elites in the attempt to discredit Trump. It had an element of Jeb like entitlement. He may yet be the guy for 2028, but his campaign leaves a lingering uncertainty of which man he really is.
The Constitution won’t allow this, as they are both citizens of the same state.
He is a boring, ugly speaker. Great as governor. Bad as Presidential candidate.
Damn. I forgot about that.
DeSantis lost when he helped pass a law that prevented you from criticizing a certain group of people. When dems get I power eventually they are going to turn that law on its head with new creative interpretations.
“The Constitution won’t allow this, as they are both citizens of the same state.”
I am afraid you are right.
But it is like the anti-gun people. They pass a law it takes 5 years for it to be overturned by the courts and then they rephrase and pass the law again
Unpinged ping..
>> DeSantis was a much better presidential candidate.
Apart from his qualities as a governor — DeSantis was actually a LOUSY, tone deaf candidate with little to no sense of timing. And for those who love to accuse President Trump of selecting poor lieutenants and advisors... DeSantis assembled, and took advice from, some real howlers.
>> As governor, he certainly looks and acts presidential. Does the right things for his state. As a candidate, he never resonated with the electorate...
Rick Perry (TX) was the same way. Although I believe Ron DeSantis is head and shoulders above Perry in governing capability.
Then why hasn’t Florida secured its elections or protected its budget and taxpayers from Deep State...?
“DeSantis was a much better presidential candidate. He could have actually won.”
Instead he listened to his wife and the Deep State, flipping on Ukraine, and attacking Trump. Pretty much wrecked him as top-tier material.
But yes, he had a chance as a default candidate (certainly far better than the others), but ONLY if Democrats had taken out Trump for him, because there was NO WAY any other Republican stood a chance, as long as Trump was in the race.
