House passes bill that could lead to U.S. TikTok ban, and Senate’s OK looks likely

The U.S. House of Representatives on Saturday voted in favor of a revised bill that could lead to a nationwide ban of TikTok, setting the measure up for a Senate vote before President Joe Biden can sign it into law.

The House had approved an earlier version of its bipartisan bill a month ago, but the legislation was subsequently changed to get the support of a key Democratic senator — Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell of Washington state.

The bill aims to ban TikTok in the U.S. if the video-sharing app continues to be controlled by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance Ltd. The bill had originally included a provision requiring ByteDance to divest itself of TikTok within six months, but House Speaker Mike Johnson and other top House Republicans tweaked the legislation to stretch that deadline to a year.

Johnson included the updated TikTok legislation in his series of bills that provide support to Ukraine, Israel and other U.S. allies, which the Louisiana Republican was working to get passed on Saturday with help from House Democrats as hardline GOP lawmakers voiced objections and threatened to end his speakership.

Biden has promised to sign the TikTok bill into law if it clears both chambers of Congress. Supporters of the measure have argued that the popular app is a threat to national security and have raised data-privacy concerns around it.

A TikTok spokesperson, meanwhile, has said the U.S. government is “attempting to trample the free-speech rights of 170 million Americans and devastate 7 million small businesses nationwide.”

Cantwell in early April had said the House’s original TikTok bill “could be better,” fueling expectations that her committee and the full Senate wouldn’t move quickly on it, but she came out in support of the revised measure on Wednesday.

It’s not a Tik Tok ban.

It’s a Jones/Carlson/Rogan/Barr/Brand/etc. ban.

Tic Tok is merely the bait. Like a Trojan Horse this gives the Federal Government the power to ban websites it does not like.

There’s an open seat in my congressional district and he appears to be a RINO. At this point, I might as well as vote for the Democrat in order to punish the GOP.

I will probably leave it blank unless the libertarian candidate is running. The Republicans are solid in other races. The GOP in the U.S. Congress is a joke. Obviously, they are all corrupt and blackmailed. So it’s time to clean slate and start over in 2026. But we should lose big in 2024.

I consider it an undeniable truth of life that the worst of the worst want to be politicians first. This is why no matter how many parties there are it always seems to end up as a Uniparty. The kind of people who want to run the lives of other people tend to be tyrants and crooks. It is only when the people who just wanted to be left alone rise up that any good people manage to get into office.

No such thing as a decent politican. Our founding fathers were fed up with the British Parliament and King George III, so that led to the American Revolution. George Washington was a planter after all.

It’s an election-losing issue for both parties.

“after all FR is pro Trump and “Russia Russia Russia”

Exactly right. In their twisted minds this makes the FR eligible for the very same demise according to this law. They don’t have to prove it, the president just has to say so in the name of national security.

GOOD that they are doing this. Smartest thing Republicans have done in some time. BAD that this wouldn’t go into effect until after the election. The political effects should be felt before people vote.

The Chinese government is likely to ban all US Internet companies from customers in China in response.

The US is being run by idiots.
