NEW YORK, April 18 (Reuters) - Lawyers in Donald Trump's historic criminal trial on Thursday selected 12 jurors who will assess his guilt or innocence over the coming weeks in a case stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star.
Lawyers for the defense and the prosecution still must select alternate jurors for the trial, the first ever in which a former U.S. president is the defendant. Opening statements could take place on Monday, said Justice Juan Merchan, the judge overseeing the trial.
Earlier in the day, Merchan dismissed a juror who said she felt intimidated that some personal information was made public. The judge also excused another juror after prosecutors said he may not have disclosed prior brushes with the law.
Trump's outsized public presence created unique problems during the jury selection process, which started on Monday.
Roughly half of the first 196 jurors screened in heavily Democratic Manhattan were dismissed after saying they could not assess the evidence impartially.

There are a lot of people I follow on X who follow hardcore communists because they need to keep tabs on what movers and shakers in their camp are saying. The fact that #2 downloaded and installed Truth Social is a better sign than following Cohen is a bad sign. Many of Trump’s truths are cross-posted on X, so there’s really not much reason to join Truth unless you want to engage with the community there. That doesn’t exclude the possibility that #2 is a troll.
Of course, it could also just be a smokescreen for a hardcore communist to get onto the jury, but how would that person know if they’re going to be selected for this trial? Would they install the app as soon as they get the letter in hopes it’d be Trump’s case? It seems unlikely.
The only questions are whether Trump will be jailed or placed on House arrest and whether the sentence will be stayed during his appeal. If Jonathan Turley is correct, I doubt these charges would stand on appeal since they involve Federal crimes and will eventually end up at SCOTUS.
