A Ukrainian loss, which could happen very soon if U.S. weapons don’t arrive, would ramp up Russian efforts to destabilize the governments of NATO countries and increase defense spending across the alliance, among other disastrous effects, Hanno Pevkur, Estonia’s Defense Minister, told reporters Friday.
When U.S. officials like President Joe Biden talk about why Ukraine matters, they rely on broad notions of democracy and the continuation of the international order—without specifically explaining what a Ukraine loss would mean for ordinary Americans. Perhaps because of this, Americans are evenly split on the question of whether the United States is doing too much for Ukraine.
Pevkur said one of the deliverables from last year’s NATO Summit in Vilnius was new battle plans for Eastern European countries should Ukraine fall.
“These plans address these different scenarios,” he said. “Of course, for obvious reasons I cannot be very specific, but I can assure you that these plans are shaped by looking at the possible Russian posture in our neighborhood.”
One of the likely consequences of a loss, he said, is a much larger and more dangerous Russian military.

Or he was sick and dying.
And that info was as accurate as anything the Biden’s joint Chiefs put out.
It’s not the Russians. It’s Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Hondurans, Haitians, Nigerians, Indians, Pakistanis, Venezuelans, Brazilians et al. The whole damned world’s slags of slags. IN OUR COUNTRY RIGHT NOW.
No keyboard needed to see that FRiend. There’s no amount of Russian scare mongering that can equal the already-existing carnage going on right here on our streets.
It's simply amazing that you trust the CIA.
Do you trust the FBI, too?
So, why should anyone here believe you over Johnson?

Michael McFaul—US Ambassador to Russia, 2012–2014—wrote an op-ed in WaPo in 2004 where he asked, “Did Americans meddle in the internal affairs of Ukraine?” Then he answered it, “Yes.”
Why did McFaul write the article? Because in 2004, Soros and other NGOs fomented the Orange Revolution in Ukraine. Basically, the election was won by a pro-Russia guy. So people protested and demanded a new election. Then, a month later, the pro-US guy won the new election with 52% of the votes. Democracy, America-style.
BTW, that guy—Yanukovych—who lost the election in 2004 … ran again in 2010 and won fair and square. ‘That’s why we had Euromaidan’.
If one goes back in history, one will see that the CIA worked with Neo-Nazis(!!) and ultra-nationalists in Ukraine for decades, starting right after World War II. Declassified CIA documents describe Project Aerodynamic in the 1950s and ’60s that recruited Ukrainian nationalists—including Nazis and war criminals such as Mykola Lebed who was accused of killing tens of thousands of Poles and Jews—to work against the USSR. So, now hopefully one can clearly see the patterns and that Ukraine is really of special importance to the U.S. But why? Well, has anyone heard of Brzezinski, the geopolitical expert who influenced US foreign policy for 40 years? He came up with the idea of Mujahideen in Afghanistan to fight the USSR, created Al Qaeda, and then repeated the same strategy of using Islamic terrorists in the Balkans, the Caucasus, Libya and Syria. Brzezinski explained in his 1997 book, The Grand Chessboard that “Ukraine is a geopolitical pivot. Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be a Eurasian empire.” He also said that Ukraine must be brought into NATO by 2010.
Your need to blame the CIA has either warped your thinking until you believe the CIA is to blame if the toilet paper roll is on backwards, ("The greatest trick the Devil ever played on humanity was to convince it that the CIA did everything he was accused of"), or you have a vested interest in promoting a myth. Your history on FR argues for the latter.
OF COURSE Americans supported the nascent democracy in Ukraine. Who wouldn't? It was done right out in the open, with news cameras rolling. And once the Ukrainian people had a fair shot at choosing their government, YOUR GUYS LOST.
Which justifies Moscow's fabricating a myth that some shadowy American equivalent of the GRU must have snuck in the back door and turned the tables. And justified in their minds and yours mounting a full-scale military invasion aimed at crushing a government that finally DID represent the will of the popular majority. Not naive, not ignorant, just grounded in reality.
The claim is that the CIA publicly admitted to fomenting the Maidan "coup". If it was public, which news organization reported it? If it was reported, where is the evidence? Do you really expect me to believe, what with all the hate-America blogs out there, that no search engine you have access to can find it? The best that hyper-partisan Kazan can come up with is an op-ed from ten years earlier. Maybe that writer had a time machine?
“Lloyd Austin is on record saying if Ukraine can’t win, then NATO will go to war with Russia.”
Truth
We’re dealing with the 16th-century mindset of the Russian Boyars. In a word: Feudalism.
People are less than livestock in their thinking. If their takings are rewarded it will only lead to more invasions. Debts have interest payments and rulers always want more subjects to service their debts.
Welcome back to the 16th century.
So, it happened but there’s no record of it? Is that your position?
That explains why Putin went into the history lesson with Tucker Carlson.
This is a European squabble when you get down to it, America has zero chance to iron out those beefs which go back centuries.
George Washington’s Farewell Address clearly points out for America to steer clear of European squabbles. The Deep Staters are so far removed from the Founding Fathers.
Washington would cringe at the }” America World Police “ that the DeepState perpetuates.
ummm, yeah, no.
all kinds of public records of everything the CIA has done, right? Just ask, right?
sighidjit
Yup. The Russian military has to be withering on the vine. They have lost so many soldiers. Not sure how Putin can withstand it all.
We can always set off a bomb on the Russia/China border where they went at it in ‘69. Unexploded ordinance-leftover.
Of course, I don't deny that.
But, YOU DO deny that driving a democratically-elected out of office was NOT the will of the people in Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk. They overwhelming voted for Yanukovych and EVERY MORAL RIGHT TO SEEK INDEPENDENCE AND JOIN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION.
The population there was under no obligation to be discriminated against, persecuted and murdered by Ukrainian nationalists and neo-Nazis that hated them.
And, if you think the Russians were going to tolerate being cutoff from a naval base they had maintained in Crimea is 1783, you're out of your mind.
Of course, we, NATO and CIA were absolutely willing participates in encouraging the Maiden coup, not because we gave a damn about the people of Ukraine, but because we wanted to install a puppet government our elite could profit from and because we wanted to hurt Russia.
That you're denying all that and the CIA's dirty role in it all is laughable.
The CIA is every bit as corrupt at the FBI.
We've gone from using the CIA and our influence to free other nations from tyranny to using it to enriching our elite.
Would Great Britain be justified in invading Ireland because the Irish speak English?
As far as I can see from reading, (and I've read a lot), Russophones in the Donbas weren't unhappy with living under the Ukrainian government until Putin's "green men" showed up. Then they "voted" to secede from Ukraine under duress. In "elections" that nobody but Russia thinks were free and fair.
Claiming that Moscow has a right to annex Crimea has no more legitimacy than the British would have by demanding to annex Bombay because they once had a large naval establishment there.
Britain, France, Belgium, Netherlands et.al. have all relinquished their empires. The USA voluntarily gave the Philippines full independence after WW2. Only Moscow refuses to accept that the era of empires is OVER, and demands to re-construct theirs by force of arms, at the expense of the peoples who were finally freed in 1991. This of course means nothing to you. As far as you Russians are concerned, might makes right, period, end of story. Has been so since the Mongol period ended. Which is why western nations oppose you, why NATO still exists, and why more nations in your proximity have asked to join NATO since 2022. ASKED to join. The NATO charter does not allow it to force itself on anyone. (Another lie you keep promoting....that NATO was expanding itself into Ukraine. Any and all contacts with NATO were/are at Ukraine's instigation. Had to be. The events of 2014 and 2022 confirmed their fears. And everybody else's
