The shooting of a bicyclist along a Lancaster County road in March in a road dispute was justified, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday.
The shooting was reported about 4:20 p.m. on March 13, on Fruitville Pike near the intersection with Delp Road in Manheim Township, the DA’s office said.
On that day, Robin Megill, 33, of Lancaster, was riding a bike on Fruitville Pike in the lane of travel with multiple vehicles backed up.
The driver directly behind Megill beeped their horn, police said, prompting Megill to stop in the middle of the roadway with no traffic in front of him. His actions halted the line of traffic behind him on Fruitville Pike.
“Eventually Megill moved to the right side of the roadway,” police said. “Multiple vehicles passed him and then stopped at a red light at Delp Road. Megill chased the lead vehicle, visibly pedaling uphill to catch a vehicle that beeped at him. Megill forcefully flung the front passenger door of the vehicle open and moved toward the interior of the vehicle immediately prior to being struck by a single bullet”
Megill was hit in the torso from the handgun, the DA’s office said. The driver then pulled over and called 911, according to the press release.
The DA’s office concluded the driver was justified in their use of deadly force specifically because Megill was “illegally and forcefully entering an occupied vehicle.” The driver was legally carrying the handgun and will not face any charges, the DA’s office said.
Megill, who is expected to make a full recovery, was charged with a summary violation of disorderly conduct in connection with the incident. His preliminary hearing had not been scheduled as of Friday.
Maybe you think the driver should have waited until the cyclist killed him before taking action.
So your premise is that an angry person who violently enters your home or vehicle (where the driver is immobilized) cannot be deterred in any case by any typical citizen? Or it only the non deadly use of a gun that is the issue? And how does your position comport with "live free or die?"
Actions by aggressor indistinguishable from attempted carjacking. Use of force to defend self reasonable imo.
Hot mama!
Dude, the bike rider broke into the occupied car as it waited at a stop light. The driver had every right to assume the worst of intentions and acted appropriately. End of story. Next.
Death or great Bodley harm.
One can inflict either with out a weapon.
One does not have to let someone harm you.
Before you defend your self.
It’s a Dream. Cyclists are so snarky on the road aren’t they?
I saw a pic of the scene and it looked like the vehicle may have had a decal on the rear window that should have warned the soon-to-be-dead guy to think twice about what he was going to do...
That said, who drives around anywhere anymore with their doors unlocked?
And did the car’s doors lock automatically after the vehicle was started?
Hope that LE and the DA conducted a thorough investigation.
You echo what I was wondering: after achieving 20 mph, the doors lock automatically. They don’t automatically UNlock when coming to a stop. Only when the engine is shut off. At least in modern cars….
Ah, I see the idiot bicyclist survived.
That may explain why the DA and LE didn’t go after the driver.
Interesting that we don’t know who the driver is, though.
Shouldn’t that info be publicly available as well?
I’m wondering if the shooter, for example, is a public emoloyee...?
If so, that might explain even more.
...employee...
Like a member of LE, for example.
He was on a bike for starters. I hope other 2 wheel homos get the message.
By being in fear for your life or personal safety...
Amazing, since Lancaster is notoriously a demonKKKrat stronghold. Must be a “rogue” MAGA DA... heh.
I didn’t even consider that angle……
The cyclist got what he deserved. Some of these azzholes think they own the roads, they ride side by side blocking traffic and seldom if ever stop at a stop signs and God forbid if you think you have the right away making a turn and they decide to pass you on the side you’re making turn on... It’s always your fault.
Try to get in my car like that when you're that angry and I'll give you a clear explanation.
He is not a pastor or Reverend. He has inappropriately taken a title. Which makes him an ahole.
“Are you serious? Maybe the cyclist lost his head in this dispute, but how in the world are you justified to shoot him??”
Are you for real - if an angry man busts into your car with you in it, it’s no different than a hood breaking in through a window or kicking in the door to your home - you have to assume he means you harm.
Stop drinking the “Tolerance Kool-Aid”... and maybe move over to a Dem site...
Please NEVER move to Pennsylvania; people like you are why so many people spend life in prison for just trying to defend themselves against violent savages. A rational person who has been in violent confrontations like this is the only one who understands that when someone assaults you, you can’t wait for them to cause permanent injury or kill you to act— it is a split second decision. When they attempt to open your car door, attempt to break your car window, or rush or swing at you, you can shoot them. If a group of them surrounds you, start pushing you, or knock you down, for example in a river where you may drown, it doesn’t matter how weird you acted, you now have a right to defend yourself UNTIL THE THREAT IS NEUTRALIZED. That means killing all of them. Likewise, if they are armed, and begin to witdraw, you don’t know if they are taking up covered positions to begin shooting again, so you can keep shooting until they are no longer a threat. Have you ever been violently assaulted, especially by a group of people who pulled out weapons after the assault began to swing out of their favor? If not, you should never even be allowed on a self-defense jury in my opinion. Things happen fast, and the guy you just knocked out oold, is now up and has pulled out a knife and is coming at you from behind. I have lived in some horrible neighborhoods when getting my education and had to deal with all the situations described here; I am lucky to be alive, and even luckier to not be in prison as I no doubt would with jurors like those today who live pampered life and never encounter violent people who want to end their lives.
