Kari Lake makes calls to legislators in push for repeal of Arizona abortion ban she previously backed

Senate candidate Kari Lake has made calls to state lawmakers to push for the repeal of Arizona's Civil War-era abortion ban, according to a Republican legislator who spoke about receiving a call from her.

The GOP-controlled Legislature is considering its next steps after the state Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state's 1864 near-total ban on abortion is enforceable. The Arizona House convenes again Wednesday.

Lake's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening on her lobbying of state lawmakers.

Lake, who has said she opposes the court's ruling, is among the many Arizona Republicans who have scrambled to distance themselves from the 19th century statute, despite having previously voiced support for it. Democratic Senate candidate Ruben Gallego has highlighted Lake's earlier comments about the ban.

Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who has urged the Legislature to repeal the law, said Thursday that calling a special session would not be useful now because “the votes obviously are not there.”

Hobbs said she is in discussion with Republican lawmakers and leadership to repeal the ban but declined to name any legislators.

Republicans in Arizona hold slim majorities in both chambers — a 31-28 advantage in the House and a 16-14 seat advantage in the Senate.

Not for nothing....We’re getting away from the ridiculous concept that killing a baby in the womb is some kind of right. It’s just plain murder of a human being at a most vulnerable age.

I have a much better idea, lets push to repeal the 19th amendment.

Hmmmmm. Written before they became a state. Any bearing on the law based on that? Besides, just drive over to NV. Up to 26 weeks (later if doc says) has been on the books since the early 90’s. Not likely to be removed either. So all this whining is, as usual...🐂💨💩

Considering how many women are serving in Congress and in state legislatures, good luck with that.

Interestingly more women than men are pro life, I found when I searched it.

The face of the baby killing crowd is female and it gives the wrong impression.

There needs to be some polling on this.

It seems unlikely . . . in the extreme . . . that this matter is vote moving. Or even vote inspiring.

The parties are living in the past. They represent only 27% each of the electorate, and all minds on abortion are already made up. Media harping on the matter may not affect the numbers at all.

I am actually quite surprised polling hasn’t been done to explore Independent (who dominate the electorate now) fluidity on this matter. After decades, one would think not at all.

All minds are already made up. The ONLY . . . truly the ONLY significance of the debate is on the clock. It eats minutes that should be talking about the border and the Swamp.

Her true colors are starting to show, at least to more people than they already were.

She’s an LGBT supporter too, and they will try to use the same strategy on that they’re currently using on abortion - by claiming we must throw out our principles, because it’s supposedly the only way to win.

The obvious answer to that is, if we’re just going to throw out our principles, in order to win, then we’re not really winning anything. So they’re ultimately just getting us to give in to what they want, while falsely claiming we won, something or other.

Ya she needs to push for pro life during a presidential election in which democrats are using idiot voters who refuse to realize sex is for procreating and per natural law and God left to after marriage with a provider involved

Then lose the state to democrats lose the presidential election then go back to whining about pro abortion majority and live the loser life pretending in a democrat run country you can kindly change hearts

The McStain Republicans on the AZ Supreme Court are happy to hold up an archaic law like this but refuse to consider election integrity issues that have been suppressed in the lower leftist courts for years.

They are helping the commie running against Kari Lake, because they would rather see a commie win than MAGA.

Yeah, right. So you're going to vote for the commie then? I bet you posted "Trump just lost me" after the first mean tweet.

“Besides, just drive over to NV. Up to 26 weeks (later if doc says) has been on the books since the early 90’s.”

I doubt that very much if you felt your state encroached on something you deemed a right, that you’d accept the response, “That’s OK. Just take a bus to the neighboring state.”

Even if you’re opposed to abortion, it’s a silly argument.

The “McStain Republicans” on the AZ Supreme Court, as you call them, were backed by the MAGA Republican majorities in the House and Senate.
