The Arizona Legislature devolved into shouts of "Shame! Shame!" on Wednesday as Republican lawmakers quickly shut down discussion on a proposed repeal of the state's newly revived 1864 law that criminalizes abortion throughout pregnancy unless a woman's life is at risk.

Yes, it’s very short sided, particularly at this point in the nation’s history, and with Arizona being so important. Since reapportionment of electors has taken place, there is now a scenario in which Trump could lose WI, MI an PA and still win if he gets GA, NV and AZ and wins all of NE (which is almost certain to happen if it reverts back to winner take all). Hopefully Trump doesn’t have to rely on that scenario, but if he does then AZ could be the make or break state.
In the AZ legislature, GOP legislators are trying to repeal the law. If they do vote to repeal it, I'll bet dem gov Hobbs would like to veto the repeal so she would have something to b**** about, but that would be too stupid. AZ has other insane old laws on the books.
I hope the AZ GOP does something right for a change and repeals it. I’m not holding my breath, but it would be nice to see. And it would be nice to see the signing ceremony with Hobbs forcing a smile and pretending to be happy about signing the bill into law.
Me too. Again, since the AZ AG said she would not enforce it, this may not help Dems as much as they hoped. I don’t think local Dem prosecutors are going to enforce it either. Local GOP prosecutors and cops might be a different story. Oh the irony.
Yes, the pledge to not enforce the law does somewhat blunt the effects of using it to motivate democrat turnout.
That's exactly what I see going on. The AZ legislature has had plenty of time to create new legislation and update the nearly 200 year old law. Instead, RINOs are choosing to lose to affect Trump's chances.
I'm all for zero abortion but we live in different times now when adolescents are chopping off body parts to try and be a different sex. We have to claw back a little at a time. A heartbeat bill or similar is better than losing and having the dems choose for us because we know what they'll choose.
If the AZ legislate simply repeals the old law, the newer 16 week ban enacted in 2022 should take effect, right? The law that everyone assumed would be in effect, wouldn’t that be the controlling law? Hobbs will try to damage Trump if possible. What she says now is Trump’s supreme court made the old law enforceable.
>>”If the AZ legislate simply repeals the old law, the newer 16 week ban enacted in 2022 should take effect, right?”
That’s a good question. Usually newer laws supersede older laws. I’m not sure why that wasn’t the case in this instance. Maybe the newer law’s wording has to explicitly repeal the other law? I don’t really know.
According to what I read, when the AZ SC ruled the old law was enforceable, it “rejected arguments” that it should uphold the 21st century law. Maybe they found a contradiction between the two laws. Or thought they did. Or something.
Hmmm..
