The US is seeing a stadium construction boom. Who’s paying for it?

A proposed sales tax hike to fund stadium projects in Kansas City failed this week at the ballot box.

When pro sports teams don’t get the public funds they seek, some double down on a pitch to voters or go to legislators. Others threaten to move.

Like a loss in the playoffs, voter rejection of a stadium tax plan will force the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs to reevaluate their approach.

The April 2 defeat of a three-eighths cent sales tax to fund a new downtown Royals ballpark and renovate the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium was almost assuredly not the end of the matter. Other teams and cities have faced similar setbacks, and that hasn’t slowed a wave of stadium construction underway across the U.S.

“The next page in the playbook, if they lose this referendum, would be to threaten to move,” said Brad Humphreys, an economics professor at West Virginia University, who researches sports stadiums.

Tax Payers no matter what the deal is. And, you can bet that city officials who worked to get the deal sealed will be pocketing bribe money. It’s how stadia are built in Democrat cities and counties.

Who is paying for it?

Your children, their children, their children's children...long after the stadiums are gone.

Who’s paying for it?

Taxpayers. The answer is always "taxpayers".

That’s funny. All of them are pretty much ultra modern. Doesn’t the landlord pay for the upkeep and improvements? Now we get to pay Peacock on top of it.,

My local sports team that signs players outside my local area and pays them millions needs a new stadium.

Absolutely raise my taxes so that a new stadium can be built to host my local team that signs players from outside my local area for millions of dollars.

Once the stadium is built, I will not be able to go there because the tickets will cost upwards of $200 each.

However, if I pay my local cable sports station $20 a month, I will be able to see the games on the TeeVee! Even though my interfering wife keeps trying to get me to do chores around the house.

Tax payers, who the heck else? It won’t be coming out of the pockets of the people that will profit from it, that’s for sure. It never does.

The government is awash with huge pots of unspent appropriated monies from COVID, infrastructure, environment, etc. There are huge sums unaccounted for. - absolutely obscene. The administration and Congress for the past ten years should hang their heads in shame.

In NYC they are trying to build a new Madison Square Garden but don’t have they money. If you try to go to a show like ELO in September and take a look at ticket prices, they basically start at $327 EACH! Don’t tell the taxpayer you need their money with the ridiculous prices you are currently charging!

I read they want to expand the Penn Station and relocate the MSG. While they’re at it, maybe they’ll get one of the casinos to build at the new MSG. Don’t know if that’ll work, we’re reaching saturation when it comes to gambling.

IMO there is a no more perfect stadium complex than the one Kansas City already has. The MLB teams are all being sold on the cozy downtown brickyard BS because the smaller stadiums don't look half empty on TV.

San Diego lost it's mind by moving their baseball stadium downtown. Ticket prices and concessions are sky high. Parking is a nightmare, access is equally horrible compared to the Murph.. All for a mediocre team.

I haven't been to a game at the new stadium but it looks nice to me when I walked by it, I could see that it's bad for loyal fans because it's a hassle for them to go to the games now.
