California fast food workers stunned as restaurant closes without warning over $20 minimum wage: ‘Only the beginning’
New York Post ^ | April 4, 2024 | Kristen Altus

Another California small business and its workers have seemingly suffered at the hands of the state’s newly enacted $20 minimum wage.

...

When making their way to work Monday morning, Navarro and her team learned upon arrival that the restaurant owner had made the decision to close its doors for good.

The owner, Loren Wright, told local Fox affiliate KMPH that this was the “last thing” they wanted to do, but knew by Friday night the business likely wouldn’t be able to absorb the wage hike and didn’t “want to ruin their Easter Sunday.”

The new California statewide legislation went into effect Monday and enforces a $20 minimum wage for restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

...

“I can see their intentions with increasing the minimum wage, thinking that it will attract more people,” the ex-manager added, “but I honestly don’t think it will work. This is not the first business that’s closing. There’s already a few local businesses for me that are closing, so I feel like this is just only the beginning.”

Speaking on behalf of the now unemployed Fosters Freeze team, Navarro claimed they would have preferred working at a lower hourly rate than being laid off.

“From the people that I spoke to, my employees, we would have rather stayed at the wage that we did have before, just because now we don’t have a job,” Navarro said. “And those who are still working in the areas around us that went up to $20 an hour, they got their hours severely cut. And it’s a lot less people working on shifts. So their jobs got a lot more difficult.”

Retirement is better than foreclosure or bankruptcy.
If he’s retired, he might have enough money to give to the food pantry.
A failed business benefits no one.

Did anyone in the media ever ask why bread making gives a business a pass?

See Gavin Newsom caught with hand in cookie jar again, exempts more 'friends' from $20/hour fast-food wage law

The question is: is this all a consequence of idiots not seeing the handwriting on the wall that is,as plain as the nose on our faces? Or is it part of an assault on America to destroy agriculture and food production, ranches, chicken farms etc etc etc?

Is there a free market wages? Or do you think wages can be set based on what ever criteria the owner thinks?

Like any other sale. Willing buyer (employer) willing seller (worker). Influenced by training, competence, industry and demand.

How many franchises can “walk away” when the cost of labor goes up?

Many on this sight think there is “proper” wage for a welder, carpenter etc. Many here contend that the cost of labor should not be based on supply and demand but what the employer can “afford”. Until Conservative agree in a free market for labor I will be begrudgingly in favor of a decent MW.

Making bread is the way to dodge this.

Newsome made a last minute exception to this law — if you bake bread you are exempt. He did this for the CEO of Panera Bread — a big campaign donor for Newsome.

Now, every smart business just needs to bake a few loaves and they are exempt. A YouTube channel on “unintended consequences” did a spiel on something similar . Some anti-booze Aholes passed a law saying you could not operate a bar unless you also served food — like the bar in a hotel. So, sneaky bar owners made up sandwiches that you paid for — to get “free” booze. The same sammich was used on every drink served, every customer. Until it was so rotten and slimey it had to be replaced.

The CaCaLaw is just more virtue signaling for the NPC’s combined with more donation shilling.

I believe the bread exemption only applies to those businesses that already baked bread as of a date that has now passed, so that door has closed.

Negative cash flow is bad if you are rich, middle class or poor.

One problem with a “decent” minimum wage is the people who get to decide what “decent” is.

If they decide wrong there is higher unemployment.

Note they never issue apologies to those who lost their jobs.

Negative cash flow is like an open wound.

You have to do whatever you have to do to stop it.

All the rest is just details.
