In the end, professional athletes profit from their entertainment value, and not directly from their athletic ability. They’re a type of entertainer, like an actor or a dancer or a clown. I imagine that athletes who don’t grasp this would become resentful.

My mother (rip), lettered in varsity basketball. She graduated in 1941. Her nickname was "Boots" because she was a farm girl and that's all she had. Showed up to the first practice expecting to play in her boots - but I think someone gifted her a pair of athletic shoes.
