A presumed mountain lion sighted this week walking atop a fence in South San Francisco turned out to be a large gray cat, police reported.
“We were able to confirm the Big Cat was not a mountain lion,” the South San Francisco Police Department said in a post on its Facebook page. “We are happy to report there is no potential threat for the neighborhood.”
The animal was spotted by a home security camera early Tuesday morning walking along the fence line separating two homes on the 200 block of Mansfield Drive. The photo of the cat was posted as an alert to the police Facebook page, which prompted some people to comment that the animal was too small to be a mountain lion, as measured by the fence it was walking along.
“It’s a regular ole house cat — not a mountain lion,” wrote one woman “That’s a gray house cat lmao!!! Each one of those boards is 4 inches so that cat is about 12 inches long. A mountain lion would be like 4 feet long,”
“I have seen plenty of mountain lions, but that is just a hefty house cat,” another commenter said.
Police made the search in order to be on the safe side.
“Officers conducted an area check, but were unable to locate this furry guy and there were no additional sightings,’’ said the post.

Not even about size. The shape is different. A cougar looks like a roided out cat. Shrink it down and it still looks different.
Nope. South SF is a different city than SF, in another county to the south. Still has conservatives here, and people don't display political signs nor rainbow flags. The only reference to Hitler, is about Joe Biden. At night there are many raccoons, skunks, opossums and coyotes wandering around. But rarely any mountain lions (although they can show up on a ridge from Pacifica to the west). Coyotes have recently been killing feral cats. Not nice when they leave the head or body parts on my lawn (twice in the last couple years).
How many trees died?.
LOL, I had a cat like that, we named him Smoky. Weighed over 20 pounds, paws the size of silver dollars. His dad was likely a Bobcat. He slept on my bed most of the time, he was a great companion.
Had to be a cringing liberal to imagine that kitty was a mountain lion.
I had a bobcat stroll through my backyard last year, and at first glance thought a medium size dog had somehow gotten n.
No, just a decent size bobcat on patrol.
My oldest girl, totally black, is certain she is a jungle panther.
That is absolutely hilarious! The rural area I live in is a tourist destination for those looking for a country experience-at a guest ranch-many of them have never seen a garden variety goat, sheep, etc. One guest ranch owner said a lot of out-of-state city guests think the Barbados sheep she raises are Bighorns, and she hates to disappoint them...
All right-thinking cats are apex predators at heart.
Was Calvin Coolidge big? I looked him up and he was not overweight?
My gray cat, Gaius looks just like that one and is about the same size-I can’t imagine anyone thinking that is a mountain lion-we have them in the woods here, and they are several times that size and are way more buff. A couple of years ago, a lady moved out here from a big city in some other state-she saw a neighbor’s big black cat coming out of the woods a couple of acres away and was convinced that he was a black panther-she even called the game warden, and started telling all the neighbors about the killer cat.
The cat’s owner, being a good neighbor brought her kitty over to show the woman that he was just a pet cat-and the game warden told her that there are no black panthers-only black jaguars, they weigh around 150-200 lbs and there are none of those around here-there are also black Jaguarundis, but those are found in more jungle type places-and in the Florida everglades. He also pointed out that the panther impersonator was wearing a bright purple collar, which no real or imagined panther would be doing. The lady didn’t make the mistake again-but the neighbor has kept her cat indoors since, just in case that lady holds a grudge for the embarrassment...
Because libtards are stupid
City kids... :)
That looks more like a Molehill Lion.
Lol, city people... Hard to educate them even if you tried. It is a whole different mind set. :)
At 166 pounds, Calvin Coolidge was one of the slimmest presidents. At 332, William Howard Taft weighed twice as much.
Yeah, couldn’t pass up the comment. As I recall, SSF was blue collar when I lived in SJ. Regardless, someone there still mistook a cat for a mountain lion...
I'm not saying there are no nuts in SSF, plenty of them. The divide happening in America is evident here as well, between normal and abnormal people. But not crazy like SF. SSF is transitioning from blue collar to tech, a lot of new tech business parks popped up over last 20 years fueling higher property increases and gentrification.
I welcomed a cousin last week who flew in from Philly for a convention in SF. Homeless drug addicts all around his hotel (Hilton Union Square), a view from his hotel room looking down at homeless tents on the sidewalks below. He did not want to walk the streets outside. I told him the suburbs are safe, and took him to South SF in my neighborhood for dinner. Safe to walk the streets at night, fancy restaurants, shops and no homeless at all. He flew out yesterday; last night someone was shot and killed a couple blocks from his hotel. SF is getting worse under the current liberal mayor.
