A presumed mountain lion sighted this week walking atop a fence in South San Francisco turned out to be a large gray cat, police reported.
“We were able to confirm the Big Cat was not a mountain lion,” the South San Francisco Police Department said in a post on its Facebook page. “We are happy to report there is no potential threat for the neighborhood.”
The animal was spotted by a home security camera early Tuesday morning walking along the fence line separating two homes on the 200 block of Mansfield Drive. The photo of the cat was posted as an alert to the police Facebook page, which prompted some people to comment that the animal was too small to be a mountain lion, as measured by the fence it was walking along.
“It’s a regular ole house cat — not a mountain lion,” wrote one woman “That’s a gray house cat lmao!!! Each one of those boards is 4 inches so that cat is about 12 inches long. A mountain lion would be like 4 feet long,”
“I have seen plenty of mountain lions, but that is just a hefty house cat,” another commenter said.
Police made the search in order to be on the safe side.
“Officers conducted an area check, but were unable to locate this furry guy and there were no additional sightings,’’ said the post.

I’m sure it identifies as a mountain lion.
My cat Calvin is about that size or maybe even bigger. He has blue eyes, so I named after Calvin Coolidge.
How could anyone mistake that grey cat for a mountain lion? I had a maine coon significantly bigger than that.
In my town one of those roadside signs was flashing warning of a mountain lion spotted on a local street, about 20 years ago. Turns out it was almost certainly a bobcat (not uncommon hereabouts) though there was a stray mountain lion killed in a traffic accident in Connecticut about 100 miles from here around the same time. The mountain lion was traced back to Montana, and had apparently drifted across the country.
A woman called the police when the bobcat frightened her, and the police recorded it as a mountain lion sighting. There is a large tract of land nearby, hundreds of acres, that was used for whatever purpose during World War II, that is still closed off because of chemical contamination. Must be a wildlife haven.
Ignore me. Dismiss me. At your great peril....
In case you missed it in the Academy Awards finalists celebration at theaters the year it came out.
Reminds me of the “Walmart Bighorn Sheep”. Went to Walmart one time and saw a bunch of young Walmart city kid employees staring into a van. It caught my curiousity so I told my wife I had to go see what they were so interested in. I took one look and knew what the situation was. But I stuck around a few minutes to listen to the comments coming from the kids.
“It is a Bighorn sheep”
“Bighorns are a protected species”
“This is illegal”
“It is too cold out here for that animal”
“I called the cops and they should be here soon”
“This person should go to jail forever for this”
As I started to walk away chuckling the motorcycle officer pulled up and stopped me from walking to question me.
“Is that your Bighorn Sheep in that van?”
No... But I sure wish it was... Because this is going to be fun. lol
Turns out the owner of the van was just transporting a common livestock barnyard Goat for some reason and dropped into Walmart real quick on the way by. Nothing illegal at all and just a Goat NOT a Bighorn Sheep.
Holy cow! How in the heck does ANYONE mistake THAT for a mountain lion? Self-aggrandizing drama queens, more like. Searching for their 15 minutes.
My black Persian long-haired was twice that size ... never mistook him for a mountain lion .. SMH.
