Pope Francis’s suggestion that Ukraine’s leaders should admit defeat, find “the courage to raise the white flag” and negotiate a halt to the war with Russia provoked justified fury in Kyiv and eastern Europe. He was wrong to say Ukraine is beaten, and gravely remiss in failing to condemn Moscow’s illegal aggression and war crimes. Yet Francis is not alone in wondering how this conflict ends.
Two years on, there’s no sign of a winner. Maybe that’s just as well, in the sense that outright victory for either side could be disastrous for all. Does this unheroic consideration tacitly influence the cautious approach of Kyiv’s two biggest western backers, the US and Germany? If so, it makes the absence of a credible peace process all the more regrettable – and potentially very dangerous.
Vladimir Putin again threatened to use nuclear weapons last week after France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, said Nato should consider sending troops to ensure Ukraine prevails. Much of what Putin says is posturing or brinkmanship, for he believes time is on his side. He is letting the war simmer while he mounts a repeat coup this weekend disguised as an election.
But Putin was not so complacent 18 months ago when advancing Ukrainian forces threatened to retake Crimea and expel the invaders. It was revealed last week that US officials rushed radiation detectors and potassium iodide tablets to Kyiv, acting on intelligence estimates indicating a 50-50 chance of a Russian tactical nuclear strike to prevent Crimea falling.
So great was the concern that the White House asked a group of experts to devise a new nuclear “playbook” of contingency plans, optional American military responses and escalation scenarios, the New York Times reported.

When Putin presses the red button to launch those nukes, I really hope The Guardian is one of the first targets. /spit
Even if Vlad Putin were to be toppled, you would have to hope the next guy to take over wouldn’t have visions of reconstituting the old USSR.
The zeepers could only wish.
The Ukraine and the ukrainiacs are being sifted.
It can end in more than one way.
Western Intelligence Ukraine Propaganda Article
Everyone in the wings is worse than Putin.
The British tabloids have consistently been the most deranged, misinformation-producing propaganda outlets on the Ukraine war. It’s delusional to imagine that the war is simply a product of Putin alone and that it will stop if he is eliminated, but the Brits seem to be swallowing their own propaganda.
We’ll fight until the last Ukrainian. Ukraine is being decimated demographically, financially, and materially. The median age of a soldier is 42. Zelensky has faced huge resistance trying to lower the draft age from 27 to 25. Many young men have fled the country.
How long will the Ukrainian people tolerate sending their husbands and sons to the meat grinder? For what purpose? To achieve a better negotiating position?
Putin just got re-elected. Even if he were removed, Russia would never agree to give up Crimea or tolerate Ukraine as a member of NATO. And how many more billions must we borrow to give to Ukraine?
The Guardian is trash, run by deluded leftist children.
And again.
The senior Ukraine officers are classmates of the senior Russian officers. 20-30 yrs ago they studied at the same universities in Russia and went to the same military adjucts at those universities. These are classmates of decades.
A time will come when the Ukraine military will remove Zelensky, execute all MI6 and CIA operatives in Kiev, contact their classmates and arrange to install a military junta in Kiev. This govt will have no agenda beyond technocracy. They will exist to keep the lights on and trains running. They will send all their troops home to their families. They will not join the EU or NATO. Pure technocracy, and they will even promise elections in X years.
It will be an overwhelming Russian victory, which will be reported as a Russian defeat since the govt in Kiev will be Ukrainians and the Russian troops will withdraw from anywhere that has not already voted to be a part of Russia.
I am looking at you, György Schwartz.
The Ukrainians were naive to believe Clinton and the US in the’90s about security guarantees when they gave up their nukes after the fall of the USSR. If they had nukes now, there would be no invasion. But that’s neither here nor there - we are already squandering billions of taxpayer dollars on Ukraine, and we can’t do this forever. Nor will we actively work to overthrow Putin. This is Western Europe’s problem far more than it is ours - if Germany and France want to step up and fund Ukraine’s defense, more power to them.
Like when the US money stops coming
Does that mean that, when they run out of Ukranians, they will use somebody else up?
O have read that the Ukranian nukes were not usable to the Ukranians if the had tried to keep them after the Soviet fall. True?
They had the codes in Moscow. So the Ukrainians would have to find a way to crack the codes. If they did that, the West was going to sanction Ukraine for keeping the nuclear weapons.
Your information is in error.
The Soviet weapons on Ukraine territory were functional only with the activation codes that existed only in Moscow. Additionally, those nukes required enormous maintenance the expertise for which also existed only in Moscow.
All parties globally wanted those weapons sent to Moscow before some accident occurred and killed 10s of 1000s of Ukrainians.
Bottom line — Ukraine never had those nukes. They resided on Ukraine territory but had no use there. They did not send them to Russia in return for any sort of promises. They sent them to Russia in order to get rid of them before they killed people.
And the point is all moot. That material in those nukes has decayed by now and is no use to anyone.
The war will end when Ukraine has no one left to fight it.
