Europe is a continent of pacifists – no amount of money can fix Nato. The region is neither militarily or politically prepared to uphold her treaty commitments
The Telegraph ^ | 3/15/24 | Edward Luttwak

An American withdrawal from the defense of Europe is undesirable for any involved nation – unless, of course, their capital city is Moscow – but it is obvious that the current incarnation of the US-Nato relationship cannot continue.

The debate over military spending in Europe and in the US shows no sign of resolution, in spite of very recent spending increases from a few European countries. A wide gap persists between the 3.5 per cent of GDP commitment of the US and the below 2 per cent average in Europe. While this disparity has long been an irritant, now there is a serious political challenge of a growing number of Congressional members who seek to force Europe to do her part by reducing US funding.

However, military spending is a very poor measure of each country’s actual contribution to the military strength of the alliance. One major distortion is the almost universal practice of purchasing weapons from local manufacturers regardless of their merits or their unit costs.

For the most part, you are right. That being said, both the Ukrainian and Russian soldiers have performed bravely and with distinction for two years now. Perhaps you should amend your statement to read “the non Slavic Euro warrior genes”.

Money means nothing—its all about will. No will to defend the welfare state full of foreigners who do little and hate everything. No will for anything traditional. Then will come the fall—economic failure, violence, scapegoating, and a returned to the bad old days of European History. Europe will become a sh*thole like the rest of the third world. A few really rich and a lot of angry starving poor. In the new AI world education will be valueless and corruption rules all. I hope I am wrong and a Napoleon will step onto the world stage to save Europe.

“ It’s the empty headed, media driven nonsense that you parrot regarding those exact situation but with shoes on different feet, that will result in WWIII”

You have no idea how much I don’t WANT to believe you. Sigh.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You FSB people are amusing. I respect your country Russia.
You should not disrespect the West.

You have never denounced the vast corruption and human trafficking going on in Russia. Its a country plunging into degenerescence. The Kremlin deep-state for-ever-war people are to blame.

Well, even if we had won quickly, the Entente powers wouldn’t have been kept down for long. They were much mightier in the long run than the Central powers.

The best option would have been to ask them to accept the status quo ante. Still I believe Austria-Hungary’s end would have come anyway, after the death of Emperor Francis Joseph - unless his successor would have carried out the far-reaching reforms of Francis Ferdinand.

But in real life, i.e. with the war still raging in 1916, when the old Emperor died, this was out of the question - just as the plan for Irish Home Rule had been suspended in 1914.

I suspect all that is correct.

My formulation of “Let the Kaiser keep it” is just a shorthand to stay out of Europe’s wars.

For the Anglosphere especially, WW1 was personalized as “Against the Kaiser”. etc.

Oh yes, I remember the propaganda from the Fleet Street gutter press. A skillful use of this technique, which had the desired effect, yes, but at the same time it increased the hate of nations to a frenzy.

And some people had been thinking that this phase, the general demonization of the enemy, had ended with the Thirty Years War. Alas, they were proved wrong, and the demonization of my country‘s last legitimate ruler since the first German Emperor, who was crowned in 962 AD, still shows its residue today…

The UK should have stayed out of WWI as well as France & Russia. It should have remained another “damn fool thing in the Balkans”!

If Germany had adopted the Von Waldersee plan - Russia first, avoided going through Belgium. The UK would have had a hard case to make for involving itself in a continental war. The crisis “da jour” for the UK at the time was Ireland - Irish Home Rule bill of 1914.

I’m not pinging you.
I addressed a message directly to you after your insult of the West. And this post is addressed directly to you as well.

In America we have free speech. Get used to it. (even though free speech is forbidden in your country).

You should not be afraid of debating.

If you insult people or the West (as you often do here on FR) you will be pulling them towards you like a strong magnet.
