Senate majority leader says Israeli prime minister has ‘lost his way’ and warns that country risks becoming ‘a pariah’

In remarks from the Senate floor, Schumer said he had a longstanding relationship with Netanyahu but believed he “has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take precedence over the best interests of Israel”.
Noting the prime minister’s inclusion of far-right officials in his government, Schumer said Netanyahu “has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza, which is pushing support for Israel worldwide to historic lows. Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah”.
Israel’s ruling Likud party responded to Schumer by defending the prime minister’s public support and saying Israel is “not a banana republic”.
“Contrary to Schumer’s words, the Israeli public supports a total victory over Hamas, rejects any international dictates to establish a Palestinian terrorist state, and opposes the return of the Palestinian Authority to Gaza,” it said in a statement.
“Senator Schumer is expected to respect Israel’s elected government and not undermine it. This is always true, and even more so in wartime.”
The Republican Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, struck a similar tone. “Israel is not a colony of America whose leaders serve at the pleasure of the party in power in Washington. Only Israel’s citizens should have a say in who runs their government,” he said from the chamber’s floor, shortly after Schumer spoke.
“Either we respect their decisions, or we disrespect their democracy.”

Israel is united on the war against Hamas. But the day after that, Netanyahu is gone. But if the Americans are constantly interfering, Netanyahu may stick around longer.
People like Schumer and Biden have made America a pariah. They are pariahs to Americans too.

I agree with you. Netanyahu is on his way out because he deserves to be on his way out for being surprised by October 7. That being said, I don’t think the Israelis are in any mood for Senator Schumer to inject himself into their business. Schumer lost a lot of Jewish votes today. He probably thinks he can make them up with Muslims and he might be right. The Democrats have a new pet and it isn’t the Jews.

Agree, HE was running the show. I love the guy, but I also agree that when you miss something that bad (the equivalent of about 13 World Trade Centers), the one at the top has to go.
Having said that, I have NO DOUBT that much of Israel’s dropping of their guard had to do with US sticking their noses into that country.
He's probably right. Most Jews will continue to vote Democratic. That's not going to change. Maybe before it was 90%. But now it's 75%.
But the Muslims may boycott the election. And most of them live in places like in Michigan. Biden needs Michigan.

There is only one way for any longer lasting peace, not forever but somewhat longer and this is, one side wins and the other loses. Just like beating Hitler as well as Japan. Netanyahu is right on track, much to the dismay of our corrupt administration. If the US would fight Japan under current conditions this war would go on and on forever.
So far. But will he finish the job?
