Jimmy Carter has spent over a year in hospice care. How has he defied the odds?

Last month, former President Jimmy Carter marked one year in hospice. After entering end-of-life care in February 2023, he celebrated his 99th birthday and grieved the death of his wife of 77 years and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter.

Even then, Carter was able — with help — to attend her funeral.

Even at the end of life, the nation’s longest-living president — someone who “practically no one ever thought” would be elected president, writes the New York Times’ Peter Baker — is defying the odds.

According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 90% of patients who enter hospice care die within the first six months. Roughly 36% of patients die within a week of entering hospice.

End-of-life advocates and experts cite Carter’s stay in hospice as having a positive impact on the discourse surrounding end-of-life care — a medical service that Northeastern University experts say many people put off until it’s too late.

Well he certainly seems to have lived a healthy lifestyle.

Biden, Obama and Clinton aren’t worthy to shine Jimmy Carter’s shoes, and I’m no Carter fan.

My FIL was living with us on hospice for nearly a year (dementia). For sure he did much better without all the drugs they had him on prior.

He hit a lady in memory care and was sent to a dementia psych hospital and came home on a cocktail of meds - Ativan, lexapro, risperdone, donzapel, lithium, neurontin, melamine… he was so drugged up he was unsteady and fell requiring surgery and rehab. That’s when we took him home. Prior to this incident he was walking at a good clip for at least a mile per day.

We slowly weaned him off the meds with the help of the neurologist, and he rallied quite a bit. He still went downhill due to dementia but regained some clarity and mobility for several months. He did not have any other medical issues and that helped. He was very fit and active.

The only med he went back on was risperdone to counter the aggression during his sundowning hours.

One of the biggest political disappointments of my life is that this sack of $hit lived long enough to be displaced as “Worst President Ever” - not just once, but twice (by the Halfrican and Grandpa Hairsniffer).

Of course, he’s always thought that he was one of the best...but that’s a perfect example of thee Dunning-Krueger Effect.

As to what’s keeping him alive...he’s just too stupid to die.

You make another point in my argument that people invent picky non important things to hang on Carter.

Malaise.

Jimmy never used that word in any speeches, yet it was the media who made up that phrase.

He’s like a Dem officeholder.

He wants to vote in November from the nursing home as a living American rather than from the graveyard as a "special" Dem voter.

Hope he asked for forgiveness for every drop of blood and every penny wasted in the ME due to his shah problem. It’s hard to believe a president can have that many decades of destructive impact.

My mother nearly died (had stopped eating and drinking) at age 98 and was put into hospice for her “last few days”; but she rallied and resumed eating & drinking. She lived, under hospice care, for another 2 years dying at age 100 years, one month, 10 days.

My mother, then in her 80’s, wasn’t responding to medications. I was concerned that she was being over-medicated. I had her change doctors and the new one took her off of nearly all the meds except for a couple. She perked up within a month. And lived to be 100 yr old.

Carter was perceived as left in those days.
But compared to the fundamentalist far left-wingers we have today... Carter is comparatively a right winger! Sounds crazy I know, but the world has changed.

I turned 18 in 1976. I proudly supported Ronald Reagan way back then.

I was 18 too then, and had just joined the military. Having been raised in a Democrat household in a liberal state, I voted for Carter. By the time I left the military, after serving under Carter and seeing what he did to the military in four short years, I then voted for Reagan and left the military a staunch conservative.

“Carter is responsible for the mess in Iran because he thought the Shah dissed him. The man was a coward and prideful.”

He was an obvious anti-semite.

They keep him in the fridge until they can accommodate another state funeral.

><

I think the Carter family will pass on a state funeral.

Besides, I can’t see the Rats and President Trump mingling or even shaking hands at a state funeral.

I have had some “old people” class. They recommended hospice.

1) It is all free.
2) you may get better care, change of medication, reevaluation.
3) apparently, sometimes people even exit hospice and return to “normal” life.

They recommended to enter hospice as soon as you qualify.
