SS United States Conservancy in South Philadelphia faces eviction

You've probably seen this massive ship here docked at Pier 82 in Philadelphia. It's the SS United States. Once known as the queen of the seas, the vessel's caretakers are sending out an sos as it faces the threat of eviction. There has been an on going dispute between the SS United States conservancy and Penn warehousing about unjust docking fees. The once grand ocean liner is simultaneously knotted in a legal mess. Its fate lies in the hands of a federal judge who could decide the ship must be booted due to hundreds of thousands of dollars in outstanding fees. Such a move based on timing could leave the conservancy that owns the 990-foot boat in need of finding a new home, possibly sinking it for good.

The ship arrived in Philadelphia for temporary docking pending restoration in 1996. It remains were it arrived. It obviously lacks funding. Some plans include refitting the ship as a floating hotel and then possibly towed to NYC. Congress could fund the project, and ship is historically significant. Yet, it remains rusting away on the pier. It is visible to anyone from I-95 or crossing the Walt Whitman Bridge to or from Camden, NJ.

Might as well scuttle it in the Atlantic. From what I’ve heard, they didn’t even have bathrooms for LGBTs.

Only if they first fill the ship with rainbow warriors!

Meanwhile, its keel is slowly but steadily rotting away.

That ship is in such a rotten, deteriorated condition, it’s appalling. It would be a near wonder if it could survive being towed to a scrapyard.

It’s an artistic representation of the Philly-Camden-Chester area.

Forgotten and dying.

“Meanwhile, its keel is slowly but steadily rotting away.”

There’s an unmistakable allegory in that.

looks to me like that rust hulk is ready to be towed to Brownsville to be broken ... assuming that’s even worth the towing expense ...

Probably for the migrants. Democrats would be happy to provide funding for that.

IOW, it's the tear down the statue mentality.

How about using it as a campaign advertisement for Trump to make the SS United States great again if he wins. Might pick up some Pennsylvania voters too.

Reminds me of the ship in this episode of The Naked City.

Good one to me.

I actually crossed the Atlantic on the SS United States in 1966. Great ship.

Sad. The ship was only in service from 1952 to 1969. If it was going to be repurposed it should have happened 50 years ago. Asbestos removal was a major job. There were some great plans for converting the ship, but too much work and too much money would have been needed to put them into effect.

I had a very nice detailed model of her on my desk for years.

In my Dreamworld, It’d be Nice if some super-rich guy bought it, re-furbished it, and established a High Style, One Class (First, of course) transatlantic service for other Very Wealthy People — and everybody would dress formally for dinner; and they’d have all Top-Drawer Major “A” list entertainers in The Old Grand Style.

Crew and a few paying passengers could occupy the smaller cabins, but in All First-Class, Five-Star Service, I figure all the accomodations would be suites of several rooms going for $10,000 a day — or more.

I think it could pay out pretty quickly. (But nobody THAT rich reads these pages..)

So, I guess she’s to be lost... That’s a shame...
