ER visits for children accidentally eating melatonin have spiked drastically: CDC

Unsupervised exposures of infants and young children to melatonin have increased substantially in recent years, landing thousands of children in the emergency room.

The number of kids aged 5 and younger who went to an emergency room for unsupervised melatonin ingestion increased 420 percent from 2009 to 2020, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

More recently, melatonin was implicated in approximately 11,000 emergency department visits among infants and young children between 2019–2022.

Those ER visits highlight the continued need to educate parents and other caregivers about the importance of keeping all medications and supplements out of children’s reach and sight, the CDC said.

In the case of the gummies, the sugar alcohols probably cause as many problems as the melatonin (which children already have a lot of, released from the pineal gland).

Yeah.

Don't think so.

I would say it is melatonin AND something else and the something else is the problem.

Melatonin comes in candy form now, gummies or fruit flavored chewables.

Melatonin is a sleeping drug. These people are giving their babies sleeping pills. And when they turn blue they are bringing them to the ER. It could be babysitters or parents. But melatonin is a pill that does not taste good. A baby would not normally go for this over any other drug.

From WebMD.com:

“Experts haven’t been able to find an LD 50 for melatonin. Very high doses of melatonin weren’t even fatal in animals.”

You know your body produces melatonin naturally right?

The melatonin we get is sweet, like with an artificial sweetener. Kind of tasty. Kids would eat by the handful if they could.

I couldn’t believe it when I saw an ad for melatonin for kids in the Costco magazine. So they might actually be given melatonin by a parent and then take more on their own or take their parents’ version, which is likely a higher dosage.

But why in the world kids need melatonin in the first place is beyond me. Let them get out in the sunshine during the day and they’ll produce plenty of melatonin on their own.

Ten GRAMS?! You mean micrograms? Maybe milligrams? The body naturally produces up to 30 mcg per day. Most supplements are around 2-3 mg. I just checked my sleep supplement and it’s 1 mg per capsule. I take one as needed. 10 grams would have a deleterious effect for anyone.

Melatonin comes in candy form now, gummies or fruit flavored chewables.

Walmart also sells it in quick-dissolve form, that is sweetened.

There are flavored, chewable melatonin pills.

But child-proofing a home is the absolutely most basic of parental tasks.
