According to a Telegram channel (@serhii_flash), the Russian military has begun deploying FPV (First Person View) drones equipped with coils of fiber optic cables, marking a significant advancement in drone communication technologies. The Ukrainian military has encountered one of these unusual drones, which had a 10-kilometer length of fiber optic cable unspooled during flight.
This cable control method offers a crucial advantage on the battlefield as these drones exhibit a unique resistance to electronic interference, making their neutralization extremely difficult, if not impossible, with current methods. The constant and uninterrupted video signal provided by the fiber optic cable allows for high-quality image transmission, thereby increasing the precision and effectiveness of strikes. Additionally, this technology eliminates the "radio horizon" phenomenon, which can cause a loss of connection in the drone's final meters of flight.

Generally between 8 and 10 um for a single mode optical fiber. With outer cladding it’s variable.
“The US and Europe (but especially the US) have sufficient hardware to give Ukraine.”
OBVIOUSLY the people who know more than you or I don’t agree with the above as the LAST THING they want is Ukraine to lose, just before the 2024 election...which is what it’s now looking like.
So, I’ll defer to them - they OBVIOUSLY got in over their heads, and now it’s simply damage control.
“The “neocon” term is wrong.”
Take it up with Wikipedia, the have a picture of Nuland right on their Neocon Page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservatism
You may have opinions, but some things are FACTS, regardless of whether you approve of them.
TOW missile engines must have a LOT more power than battery-powered drones.
“What you should be talking about...”
Don’t need to, but now they kicked Nuland out on her ass, I hear that there is a VERY high-level opening at State, so perhaps you send your resume there?
I am VERY retired. I have suffered the consequences of many years of stress. I have had offers for consulting gigs (SCADA systems), but I would rather live, no matter what they want to pay me.
And that’s what you SHOULD be talking about in re this subject, the nitty gritty of modern warfare. Any political chieftain, whatever their views or agendas, eventually has to call on a pool of professionals with their understanding of the needs and current methods. Its those professionals that build the equipment pools, institutions and organizations in peacetime.
Nuland doesn’t run wars (or she is wrong to micromanage them if so). There are professionals for that.
They do. The entire US stock of 155mm and HIMARS for instance is properly forfeit. The US has no need for that under the circumstances. There is no forseeable military need for that stuff other than shooting at Russians.
I doubt very much that Ukraine can lose before Nov 2024.
Thank you very much, I was sure that one of the members of FR may have the answer. FR certainly is a great site.
“I am VERY retired.”
Assuming you’re not a high school kid (which is possible here), unless you retired from the Joint Chiefs withing the past 5 years, then you know EXACTLY as much as I do regarding the state of US readiness to fight a major world power, which is NOTHING (and if you did retire from the Joint Chiefs, instead of being here, you’d be on CNN trying to convince the country that Ukrainian ‘victory’ is just around the corner...at least if we give Zelensky another $61B in pocket change)
So, I ONLY look at actions and motivations...and the ACTION is to end this nightmare BEFORE the election, and even Europe agrees, as they could give Zelensky the $61B tomorrow and use it to buy whatever US weapons were available and give it to Ukraine...but they have chosen otherwise also.
So, it’s over, the US is defeated and that is EXACTLY the reason we should have NEVER picked a fight with a superpower without getting ready for it...and we did NOTHING to prepare, other than beat our chests and have Drag Queen Parades.
There can be some advantages. But the disadvantage is with that 10km cable. The drone operators become sitting ducks. Anyone operating around the long cable is put at risk.
But yes the battlefield dynamics are changing. If Putin wants to beat America he would try to get a bunch of agents snuck in the US to use such devices and do plenty of sabatoge. Of course the US leaders like Biden are aware of this & if they want to keep America safe they have long secured the borders extremely well.
That last part is sarcasm. Biden has been a disaster.
“There is no forseeable military need for that stuff other than shooting at Russians.”
AGAIN - go to the Pentagon and TELL THEM. Being on this site and trying to run the US military just makes you look silly.
“Nuland doesn’t run wars (or she is wrong to micromanage them if so). There are professionals for that.”
If they didn’t spend 2 hours every morning dressing like women, I might agree with you, but this is NOT the military you claim to be familiar with - otherwise Ukraine would either be halfway to Moscow by now (as it was during Iraq 1), or the Neocons would have NEVER been allowed to start this war.
The drone version of the old wire- guided middles from the 60’s.
Er, the Russians started this war. And that one in 2014. Their guys crossed the Ukraine border, not the other way around.
And I assure you that the lads at the Pentagon don’t dress like women. They privately do the eye roll and shut up, because that @#£% is political.
Have you seen some of the footage with drones dropping grenades? It freaking unbelievable. Crazy how war the battlefield has changed.
“Er, the Russians started this war.”
Kind of tough to have an adult discussion here when you parrot Neocon Talking Points. It’s been discussed PLENTY here, and I’m not interested in being spammed on the issue anymore...so have a good evening if that’s all you’re left with.
A bunch. I was surprised how effective it was.
Talking point?
It’s a fact. Who were those green men? Whose tanks entered Donetsk?
“Talking point?
It’s a fact. Who were those green men? Whose tanks entered Donetsk?”
Have a good evening, and by the way your credibility on ALL OTHER CLAIMS is now in question here.
