I’ve sailed more than most around the British Virgin Islands. St. Croix, St. Martin and St. Thomas. There’s nothing in this life that I enjoy more than sailing in the Caribbean.
In 2012-2013, I moved to the islands so I could sail every day. I finally gave up though as murder after murder took place and nothing, effectively, was “officially” done about it. Two black males, security guards for an American couple, hacked them to death with machetes less than a half mile from me. An artist was hacked to death in his home. A 12 year old son of a friend of mine had his cell phone stolen at knife point. “Officially” you can own a gun but the police “sell” your home address and gun info to the local gangs who come visit you in the middle of the night.
I finally gave up on “the Caribbean” and moved back to Texas. The Caribbean is just too dangerous to go off sailing by yourself. There’s no way to protect yourself as this couple found out.
Very unfortunate for a part of the world that has given folks a great lifestyle for many years. But crime follows wherever the money goes, and unstable governments in the islands appears unable to deal with it.
Unfortunately Submarines don't have Yardarms.
