Moldova reports 'unprecedented' Russian interference in leadup to 2 major votes

Moldova’s national intelligence agency warned Tuesday against "unprecedented" Russian interference as the country gears up for a referendum on joining the European Union and a presidential election.

The Intelligence and Security Services, or SIS, released a report saying it has gathered data indicating Russia plans to launch vast hybrid attacks against Moldova through 2024-2025 to try to bring the former Soviet republic back under Moscow's influence.

Head of the SIS, Alexandru Musteata, said in a press conference that Russia sought to undermine the democratic polling this year in the eastern European country.

"There is information about an attempt to compromise the referendum on European integration, the presidential elections, to denigrate institutions and candidates who will promote the idea of European integration," Musteata said.

The report said part of Russia’s strategy would be the "extensive use of social networks," such as Telegram and TikTok, to back pro-Moscow political figures, create socio-political and economic crises, encourage anti-government protests, as well as provoke "social clashes to incite inter-ethnic hatred" on top of sprawling disinformation campaigns.

Moscow has been running intense propaganda on Moldovan news and social media for several years. Nothing really new, except that the elections are coming closer.

"Musteata named pro-Russia Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor as a central figure in Russia’s fresh campaign. Shor, the head of the outlawed Russia-friendly Shor Party, was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in jail last year on fraud and money laundering charges."

" 'According to the data, Shor’s main task for 2024 is to compromise the results of the (EU) referendum,' the SIS head said.

I’d bet the CIA is behind it. They’ve got their fingers into everything.

Trying to do the same thing they did to Ukraine in 2014

Interference in local elections is standard procedure for Russia, prior to taking over a country by subterfuge

This is wrong and evil. Hopefully someday Russia will follow our example and have a strict “hands off” policy in other nation’s elections.

The two greasy American Pravda mouthpieces are Andreea Alexandru and Stephen McGrath.

If there’s any country in the world shittier and more corrupt than Ukraine, it’s Moldova. Their current leader is a CIA poseur installed after a ‘color-revolution’ and is widely disliked by the population.

Like here in the good ole’ USA, “misinformation” is everything and anything that isn’t a sloppy BJ of the current administration.

The only interest the EU and NATO have in a pathetic nation like Moldova is that it gets both closer to Soviet ammo depot in Transnistria.

The Russians couldn't give a hoot about Moldova itself. It has no historic ties to Russia and would be a welfare client for any nation responsible for it.

Russia is nowhere near as good at it as the CIA.

You do a great job of repeating the Russian lies and propaganda

Guess we can expect an illegal Russian invasion of Moldova then, huh?

Just like Ukraine?

Must not be any UKE battlefield wins.

That’s why we’re getting these side stories.

Annexation of Moldova would in the near term open a new front against Ukraine. With a store of ammunition already conveniently in place. No wonder Moscow has “green men” on Moldovan soil guarding the depot.

Moldova is also on the route to control of the Balkans and ultimately access to the Mediterranean via the Bosporus. This has huge military significance for Moscow, you cannot deny it.

Sadly, all they have to report is sinking another Russian warship.

There are two (or three) narratives about the CIA:

1. They are behind everything, and malevolent besides. This is very old, and was a staple of third-world paranoia. It was an explanation for every local failure, deficiency, and cock-up.

2. They are utterly incapable, witness the roll-up of their entire Chinese humint network. They have always been the gang that couldnt shoot straight, and was always two steps behind the KGB/GRU, not to mention Mossad and MI5/MI6.

2b. The CIA is worthless abroad because it is obsessed with domestic spying and active messures.

You, er, over-egg your pudding here. Moldova is poor ground for Russian control of anything. The terrain sucks, its on the wrong side of the Carpathians, and the people are hostile.
