Oregon lawmakers passed a bill to recriminalize possession of drugs weeks after Gov. Tina Kotek declared state of emergency over the fentanyl crisis in Portland.

A bill recriminalizing the possession of small amounts of drugs was passed by the Oregon Legislature on Friday.

The bill reverses a key part of the state's drug decriminalization law, which was the first of its kind in the U.S.

Efforts from lawmakers come as governments struggle to respond to the deadliest overdose crisis in U.S. history.

Oregon has seen a 190 percent increase in overdose deaths since the initial decriminalization bill went into effect in February 2021, according to the CDC.

Democrats war on the war on drugs hasn’t worked out very well. The only reason this was passed was due to pressure from relatively sane Democrats. Oregon is a one party clown world state/

I am tired of trying to help the moron leftists!

let them die

they don’t want to have kids, fine, end your line

they want to cut off their penises, fine, end your line

they want to let robbers and murderers roam their streets, fine, they will be the victims

they want to tax and regulate business to death, fine, they will have no tax base in their hellholes

they want to murder any babies they do have in their wombs, fine, end your line.

Most of what liberals do only hurts themselves, lets just let them and then move on when they are all dead.

Given that they’re liberals, it’s a safe bet that they’ve learned nothing from the experience. So in a couple years Oregon will probably decriminalize everything again.

This is surprising. I thought for sure they’d start taxing it.

Irrelevant if there’s not enough cops to enforce it or DA’s and judges that will prosecute.

I agree with you, limited government would allow this. But the problem is, it’s always pushed and forced upon people like you and me and our children—-that’s where it becomes a problem.

Finally somebody gits it!

We have the answer to almost all of our problems right in the palm of our hands. One simple thing will solve the homeless and crime problems. Our cities will be reborn.

All we need to do is make all hard drugs legal and FREE!

We could take all the money spent on the war on drugs and provide free drugs to all the junkies. These people are looking for the ultimate trip. You never come back from the ultimate trip, that’s why it’s the ultimate. These people are trying to off themselves. Leave them to it. What we need to outlaw is that stuff they use to bring them back from deaths door. Human beings only learn by making mistakes.

Crime will drop and overcrowding in the cities will be a thing of the past. What’s not to like about it?

Maybe I should run for office.

If a “wonderful” idea doesn’t work it is because it wasn’t implemented correctly.

Did anybody notice these two lines in the article?

"However overdoses soared as the state struggled to fund the enhanced treatment centers at the core of the decriminalization plan."

"'With this bill, we are doubling down on our commitment to make sure Oregonians have access to the treatment and care that they need,' said Democratic Senate Majority Leader Kate Lieber, of Portland, one of the bill's authors."

I actually agree with this.

I certainly don't trust the same federal government that has allowed all of these drugs into the country with their open border policies to fight them.

Criminalizing drug use essentially does one thing. It gives cops a contraband tool to stop and arrest people who are harming themselves. I’m sorry, but I don’t see why it is my right or duty as a citizen to keep people from harming themselves.

Drug use is a self-eliminating problem. Some self-important somebody’s li’l darlin’ must have offed himself. Spend more time raising your children, and leave me out of this.

So much for the deluded libertarian idea that legalizing drugs and letting the government control it is a good idea.

“ Who’s going to enforce it?”

First they’ll blame Trump, the Right Wing MAGA types, on the crisis, then they’ll demand more of your tax dollars to add thousands of “intervention specialists “, not cops, to try to enforce the new rules. Of course you can’t send druggies to prison, no, so you’ll have to release them and ask that they not get high again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
