McConnell Will Step Down As The Senate Republican Leader In November

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitch McConnell, the longest-serving Senate leader in history who maintained his power in the face of dramatic convulsions in the Republican Party for almost two decades, will step down from that position in November.

McConnell, who turned 82 last week, was set to announce his decision Wednesday in the well of the Senate, a place where he looked in awe from its back benches in 1985 when he arrived and where he grew increasingly comfortable in the front row seat afforded the party leaders.

“One of life’s most underappreciated talents is to know when it’s time to move on to life’s next chapter,” he said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press. “So I stand before you today ... to say that this will be my last term as Republican leader of the Senate.”

His decision punctuates a powerful ideological transition underway in the Republican Party, from Ronald Reagan’s brand of traditional conservatism and strong international alliances, to the fiery, often isolationist populism of former President Donald Trump.

McConnell said he plans to serve out his Senate term, which ends in January 2027, “albeit from a different seat in the chamber.” Aides said McConnell’s announcement about the leadership post was unrelated to his health. The Kentucky senator had a concussion from a fall last year and two public episodes where his face briefly froze while he was speaking.

Raised the debt ceiling.

Is not interested in closing the border.

Is a Never Trumper.

Did not sign the letter requesting a trial in the Senate for Mayorkas.

It’s not tough to find all sorts of votes and pronouncements that make him an Assistant Democrat.

A good strategy would be Cruz to AG. Nominate him for SCOTUS in 2026 and then appoint DeSantis to replace Cruz at AG when DeSantis is finished in Florida.

Well the point is moot since neither of us has a voice in this.

But it doesn't hurt to play out the possibilities.

Ok then, how much experience is required to institute a layoff all the way back to before the Obama administration. I think the feds have the “last in first out” clause since merit is unknown to SEIU

Can’t do anything as long as he’s a Senator. Unless we can guarantee another Repub Senator or he can be replaced by a Republican

Cruz is from Texas. I think they can find someone to replace him.

It's not going to be Beto sneaking in like Ossoff in Georgia.

Paxton and every other Secretary implements a cut in order to balance the budget. Lay off everyone hired from Obama admin forward. You can always rehire the good guys later. In the meantime, at the direction of the Republican house and Republican senate, cut the 10 to 20% required to balance the budget. Melie did that in Argentina and though painful they have a balanced budget.

If they want our vote, let them put up politicians who represent our values.

The problem is, there's a lack of people who have our values who want to be politicians.

Here's an idea.

Cruz is up for reelection now. In January, Trump nominates Cruz to AG. Greg Abbott appoints himself to Cruz's seat until a special election is held, where he can run to remain in the seat.

Dan Patrick becomes Governor of Texas.

That is a lie.

Ted Cruz is smart. But can he lead?

At least the Turtle denied one of Obama's nominations to the Supreme Court. And that took leadership. So we have to give credit where it's due.
