More Russian soldiers have likely died seizing Avdiivka than in the entire Soviet-Afghan war, ISW says

"Ukraine has not lost and there is no reason for Ukraine to lose. Russians are adapting for a long war effort in Ukraine, but they are not the Red Army hordes wrapped in the triumphant banners of World War II victories that Putin and his propagandists pretend them to be," the think tank said.

The ISW said the number of Russian fatalities likely exceeds those killed in the Soviet-Afghan war.

Russia has often used costly "human wave" tactics to achieve its military objectives in Ukraine.

More Russian soldiers are likely to have died seizing the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka than in the 10-year Soviet-Afghan war, the think tank the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said.

Russian forces began their brutal campaign to seize the town in eastern Ukraine in October and finally succeeded earlier this month.

However, the victory came at a high cost — Ukrainian military officials estimate that up to 47,000 Russians were killed or injured in the battle, along with scores of tanks and fighting vehicles. By comparison, up to 25,000 Soviet soldiers are believed to have been killed during the entire Soviet-Afghan war.

While Russia is known to downplay its losses, a high-profile military blogger recently said that Russia had lost 16,000 soldiers and 300 armored vehicles in the battle for Avdiivka. He was found dead a few days later, with reports suggesting he died by suicide.

War analysts and Ukrainian commanders noted that Russia's tactics to take Avdiivka often involved "human wave" assaults, in which Ukrainian positions were overwhelmed with large numbers of Russian soldiers on foot.

“How many times is this Russian lie going to be repeated? “

Donetsk was repeatedly shelled from Avdiivka from 2014 until a few days ago.

Of course, the Ukrainians claimed the Russians were shelling their own city.

Just like they blew up their own pipeline, bombed their own bridge, shelled their own nuclear reactor and blew up the dam that flooded their side of the river !

“likely”

MSN needs to come up with a story about Ukraine again. Now it’s about some people who guess how many Russian troops died.

They pound, pound, pound with artillery (or artillery and bombs,

Bombs, the infantries best friend when it comes to heavily fortified positions. The graph will show a spike in Feb., but nothing like if there hadn't been any bombing. Seems to be a lot less casualties after the bombs start to drop,

Yes, those Russians do crazy things. And the Ukrainians have lost only 31,000 troops. Just ask any of our collection of high IQ Zeeper armchair warrior military strategists. Everyone else is lying.

Vlad the Impaler could care less how many Russians he sends to their deaths in Ukraine. Via Vlad’s tactics of human waves, meatgrinder attacks on Ukrainians positions.

Are you on someone's payroll that has very deep pockets? Why keep posting this stuff? Just make yourself feel better by sending all your money to Zelensky personally. It will probably be more personally satisfying.

The Ukraine has only lost 31,000 guys in the entire war.

I heard that zElensky misspoke, and it was only 3,100.

None of this makes any sense.

The US got all bent out of shape about Russian missiles in Cuba.

None of that makes any sense to me.

“Ukraine has a population of 43 million.”

Actually HAD a population of 43M. Russia has now liberated about 10M, another 5M fled, mostly to Europe, and at least 1M can no longer fight due to battlefield injuries/deaths.

So, closer to 27M (although that may also be optimistic!).

“Russia is already one of the largest geographic countries in the world.. why do they need MORE land? the cities have been destroyed and the people have been killed or fled. What is the point? more land? None of this makes any sense.”

Prior to the war, Putin listed 4 points that he wanted taken care of in Ukraine, and seizing land for Russia was NOT one of them. After the Neocons started the war, then objectives change as Russian costs go up - so, yes, Russia will have a nice new chunk of real estate when this war ends, probably this year if Jan and Feb are any clue.

Russia says stopping the years-long shelling of Russian speaking people is one excuse.

How many times is this Russian lie going to be repeated?

This war is a competition for the resources of the Ukraine (its grain and its industries) between the nascent Fourth Reich and the resurgent Russian Empire. Both want what the Ukraine has. Both want it bad enough to kill for it.

I doubt that it’s that low, especially given the shock attacks at the beginning of the war. There’s also a beachhead across a river that is being used as a meat grinder against the Ukranians by the Russians.

That said, the Ukranians don’t have the troops to lose and they don’t have the force multiplication doctrines to really re-take territory.
