More Russian soldiers have likely died seizing Avdiivka than in the entire Soviet-Afghan war, ISW says

"Ukraine has not lost and there is no reason for Ukraine to lose. Russians are adapting for a long war effort in Ukraine, but they are not the Red Army hordes wrapped in the triumphant banners of World War II victories that Putin and his propagandists pretend them to be," the think tank said.

The ISW said the number of Russian fatalities likely exceeds those killed in the Soviet-Afghan war.

Russia has often used costly "human wave" tactics to achieve its military objectives in Ukraine.

More Russian soldiers are likely to have died seizing the Ukrainian town of Avdiivka than in the 10-year Soviet-Afghan war, the think tank the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said.

Russian forces began their brutal campaign to seize the town in eastern Ukraine in October and finally succeeded earlier this month.

However, the victory came at a high cost — Ukrainian military officials estimate that up to 47,000 Russians were killed or injured in the battle, along with scores of tanks and fighting vehicles. By comparison, up to 25,000 Soviet soldiers are believed to have been killed during the entire Soviet-Afghan war.

While Russia is known to downplay its losses, a high-profile military blogger recently said that Russia had lost 16,000 soldiers and 300 armored vehicles in the battle for Avdiivka. He was found dead a few days later, with reports suggesting he died by suicide.

War analysts and Ukrainian commanders noted that Russia's tactics to take Avdiivka often involved "human wave" assaults, in which Ukrainian positions were overwhelmed with large numbers of Russian soldiers on foot.

FWIW, the think tank cited in the article was created by Kimberly Kagan who is Victoria Nuland’s sister-in-law.

“The Average age of a Ukrainian soldier now is in the 40s.

43 years old. That’s insane!

I can’t figure out whose the bigger scum in this war.

Just know I don’t want to pay for it anymore.

Spend the cash on closing our borders!!!!!

I’m glad the ISW gets most of their funding from defense contractors. That’ll insure their objectivity when analyzing conflicts and proposing foreign-policy solutions. /s

“Vlad the Impaler could care less how many Russians he sends to their deaths in Ukraine. Via Vlad’s tactics of human waves, meatgrinder attacks on Ukrainians positions”.

Biden and his bosses will fight to the last Ukranian and then count their money.

“Russia is already one of the largest geographic countries in the world.. why do they need MORE land? the cities have been destroyed and the people have been killed or fled. What is the point? more land? None of this makes any sense.”

65% of Russia is in permafrost, no one lives there. Russia says stopping the years-long shelling of Russian speaking people is one excuse, a land buffer between Russia and NATO is another. I guess we’ll know Russia has enough land when they are stopped from taking more or stop taking more on their own. For now, Russia is expanding the land it controls.

Rashid considers the steps of Ukraine to be a primary invasion route from Europe. I'm talking about the same Europe that has invaded Russia multiple times in the past 200 years. They want strategic depth with NATO and the Ukraine becoming part of NATO would leave western Russia open to invasion along the flat Ukrainian steppe and vulnerable to first missile strikes.

This is correct. ISW is neocon central, though they eventually backed off their claims that Ukraine was winning the counteroffensive.

If the US lost 30 million, like the Russians did in WWII, due to an invasion from Mexico, we would feel the same way, too. We proved that in 1962.

You sound like one of the losing German generals on the eastern front.

This, of course, is not how the Russians fight this war. They pound, pound, pound with artillery (or artillery and bombs, like in Avdeyevka) and then their infantry move in after everyone is dead.

Your failure to understand how the war is being fought is a major reason the proxy war is failing.

Afghanistan didn’t have massive artillery batteries or drones, courtesy of American and European taxpayers like Ukraine.

They were lucky to get small arms ammo, RPGs, LAWS, Stingers etc. and other minor weapons thanks to Rep. Charlie Wilson.

Most outrageous during a time of war:

"I can say, and I am responsible for what I am saying, that they have started to commit suicide under the walls of Baghdad." -- Baghdad Bob.

"31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in this war. Not 300,000 or 150,000, or whatever Putin and his lying circle are saying. But each of these losses is a great loss for us." --Volodymyr Zelenskyy
