MOVING BEYOND CAPE BOJADOR

The early Portuguese explorers believed that the oceans were impassable below Cape Bojador, a point on the West African coast. When sailors set aside their fears and moved past Cape Bojador, they found that their fears were groundless, that their limitations were imaginary. We all have our own Cape Bojador. We fear things that we need not fear. We draw boundaries around areas of our lives and decide that we can't go past them.

Since we believe these false paradigms, we will stay within their artificial boundaries and lose whatever experiences we might have found outside them. What limits do we set upon ourselves? Have you thought about working on your college degree, but fear getting started? Does a certain rating appeal to you, but others have told you it was unattainable, so you have remained where you are? Advancement or promotion seems so far away that we resign ourselves to our present position and fail to expand our skills and knowledge.

More than 300 years before the time of Christ, Alexander the Great was marching across Asia Minor. He led the greatest army ever put together up to that time. They had conquered every foe. No one could stand up against them. They reached the Himalaya Mountains, and the advance leaders came back to Alexander full of concern and dismay. "We have marched off the map," they said. "We should go back to where we know." And they had literally marched off the known map of that time. Alexander listened to them and then said this: "Mediocre armies always stay within the known areas. The great armies always march off the map."

Making decisions, initiating new relationships, starting projects, taking a leap of faith, all require that we go beyond our Cape Bojador. Are we willing to press on and take the chance of "marching off the map?" Let's go for it! Full speed ahead!

I put my heavy duty spikies on, took the ice chipper as a helper, trudged out to the mailbaox, and it was empty. Oh well.

Now the forecast is for high winds and high temps. Weather Advisory from just an hour ago!

A series of storms moving into western Alaska are on track to bring another period of elevated winds and warm temperatures to Anchorage and the Matanuska Valley Monday and Tuesday. Expect the worst of the conditions on Tuesday morning when the stronger of the two systems moves into western Alaska. Turnagain Arm winds and Knik winds will begin to move into these areas Monday morning, bringing consistent gusts in the 20 to 35 mph range to sea level locations and 40 to 60 mph along the Anchorage Hillside. The stronger of the two systems will impact the region on Tuesday, where gusts at sea level may reach 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 75 mph possible at higher elevations on the Hillside. Expect temperatures to climb into the upper 30s and mid 40s for the duration of the event, which will lead to more snowmelt and wet roadways. Periods of light rain are possible through Tuesday evening.

So thankful I work from home, but I may have to try to clear out the path to the mailbox again.

Did you chip away at some of the ice to make your brief outing worth the trouble? Must be a mess out there these days.

YIKES!!!! That’s a nasty weather forecast, especially for Hillside! They always catch h*** up there, don’t they? Glad the winds won’t be that strong down at your level.
