As people with HIV live longer, end-stage diseases of the kidney, liver, heart and lung continue to rise. As a result, the need for organs available for transplantation has increased. However, donor organs are in chronic short supply nationwide for people with and without HIV. While people with HIV can and do continue to receive organs from HIV-negative donors, transplants from donors with HIV may reduce time on the transplant waiting list and associated costs for these recipients. Nearly a decade of research into organs transplanted from donors with HIV to recipients with HIV will inform an intended proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that, if finalized, would remove some of the current restrictions that authorize such transplants only under research protocols, potentially making them more widely available.

Supposedly, HIV-positive organ donations will be designated to HIV-positive recipients, freeing up disease-free organs for normal, uninfected people. How long is that gonna fly? HIV-infected recipients have been getting “clean” organs from HIV-negative donors all this time. Now they’re going to get infected organs, possible with a strain that they don’t have. Will they soon complain that this is “discriminatory,” as they usually do about everything?

As one on the kidney transplant list, the more I read about it, the greater my sense of trepidation about the entire process. This report is merely another log on the fire.

Don’t worry about euthanasia. They’re going to kill you with HIV organs because HIV people who are still alive are using their organs. It’s the dead ones who will be volunteering their organs. LOL.
