GOP Rep. Mark Green Will Not Seek Reelection After Leading Impeachment of DHS Secretary Mayorkas: “I Have Come to Realize Our Fight is Not Here Within Washington, Our Fight is With Washington”

House Homeland Security Chair Mark Green (R-Tenn.) announced he will not be seeking a fourth term in Congress.

This decision follows his prominent role in leading the impeachment efforts against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Green released a powerful retirement statement criticizing the Washington elites and explaining his decision to retire from Congress.

“At the start of the 118th Congress, I promised my constituents to pass legislation to secure our borders and to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable.

Today, with the House having passed H.R. 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home.

In the last few months, in reading the writings of our Framers, I was reminded of their intent for representatives to be citizen-legislators, to serve for a season and then return home.

Our country–and our Congress–is broken beyond most means of repair. I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington.

As I have done my entire life, I will continue serving this country–but in a new capacity.

I am grateful to my wife, Camie, and my family, for standing beside me and for their service to our nation.

During my time in the Army, they sacrificed dad and husband to multiple deployments–and as I have served here in Congress, they have supported me as I’ve been away most weeks.

I also want to thank the constituents of Tennessee’s 7th District for the unbelievable honor to serve them in Congress–whose vote of confidence was not only evident in the wide margins in each election, but also without ever having a single primary opponent in my three elections.

And finally, I want to thank my staff, whose unmatched hard work, dedication, and talent have resulted in our many victories and one of the lowest turnover rates in Congress.”

...

As chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, Green was a driving force behind the Mayorkas impeachment push over border security…

His panel conducted a months-long investigation of Mayorkas, his policies and his management of the department, ultimately concluding Tuesday that his conduct in office amounted to “high crimes and misdemeanors” worthy of impeachment.

Green has served since 2019 in the 7th Congressional District, which was redrawn in 2022 to include a significant portion of Nashville. He previously served as an Army surgeon and in the state Senate and is from Montgomery County.

Green flirted running for governor in 2017, but suspended his campaign after he was nominated by former President Donald Trump to become the Army secretary. He later withdrew his nomination due to criticism over his remarks about muslims and LGBTQ+ Americans, including saying that being transgender is a disease. He also urged that a stand be taken against “the indoctrination of Islam” in public schools and referred to a “muslim horde” that invaded Constantinople hundreds of years ago.

After winning the congressional seat in 2018, Green once again made headlines after hosting a town hall where he stated… that vaccines cause autism.

Forbes also revealed that during a private GOP House meeting, Green described the DHS secretary as a “reptile with no balls” for his refusal to step down from his position.

As of today, 21 members of House Republicans have announced they will not seek re-election in 2024.

I’ve been saying get to know your state politicians better than you know the DC ones. Shore up your state and local governments.

Only 25 Governors support Governor Abbot. Call your governors. State reps. Tell them help close the border.

How many Democrats have announced they aren’t running? Does anyone have a count?

I keep wondering if they are seeing an upcoming blue wave.
I don’t know enuff about their seats to know if they are safe or not.

There will be a blue wave in the 24 election cycle. Reps will be a very minority party of no consequence, a bug to be flicked off the dinner table.
Copy, paste this, print it and store it in an old mayo jar in your garage, open it 11/8 and say this guy is a prophet.

Green’s district is normally classified as “solid Republican” but it is nowhere near as solid as it was a few years ago.

Two reasons:

1. The TN Republicans did a good job in the 2022 redistricting and obliterated the old Nashville (Democrat) district which Jim Cooper held for many years. As a result, the sewer known as Davidson County — which is Nashville — had to be split into several pieces, of which the smallest piece is in Green’s district. That is also the WORST piece, however.

2. TN-7 contains the deteriorating suburban areas in Williamson County and Montgomery County. Those areas are still generally OK, but (especially Williamson) are not close to being as good as they were just a few years ago when the sewage began heavily flowing out of Nashville in most directions.

Put it together, and no longer will House Republicans get 65-70% like Green used to. Chances are very good that whoever runs for the GOP in November fails to reach 60% and may well fail to get 55% what with not having the advantage of incumbency.

That person should still win by 10 points if not a little more. barring a major catastrophe.

“I don’t know enuff about their seats to know if they are safe or not.”

Chances are good that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the seats listed above will remain in Republican hands. There is a 100% chance that, at the very least, NEARLY all of them with stay R.

The most marginal seat on that last is CO-5 (Lamborn) and it’s still a solidly GOP district for now.

....sadly, I agree....I fear for the future of this once-great country.
I am sure the Democrats will keep the Senate and with the House going to the Dems, even if Trump is elected President,
I don’t see how he will get much of anything done...
as that old expression goes, “Hope for the best, but
prepare for the worst” .......

I think the Reps ineptitude is to make sure the republican party is a minority party so if Trump does get into the WH, they won’t have to do anything for him except make noise like they support him.

“There will be a blue wave in the 24 election cycle.”

You *may* be right.

Here’s something that definitely IS right: if Republicans lose the House, these retirements will NOT be the reason why it happens.

The reason it happens will be Republicans who ARE running for re-election, losing in numerous marginal districts. For example, like the one they just lost this week in New York. That wasn’t an incumbent losing, but there are at least 4 others in New York alone who are in serious jeopardy in November.

If “only” 2 of those 4 lose, it’s a wonderful upset.

I expect Reps to get pretty much swept in any blue state. Be it through voter fraud or just the fact the Republicans have done nothing to get re-eleclted.

Jim Banks of IN is running for the Senate instead of the House this time, so he is still involved.

“... broken beyond most means of repair”

Oh how I wish he’d given some detail. Are too many of his fellow politicians crooks, or victims of blackmail, or under some other kind of threat from the congressional leadership or his peers?

Perhaps the specifics are things he can’t talk about publicly.
