FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A cyber-security expert says it could take months before Fulton County fully recovers from a ransomware attack.
It’s been nearly three weeks since the county government’s computer system was hacked, disrupting many services.
Channel 2′s Bryan Mims was in Roswell where county officials are also saying some personal information may have been leaked.
They haven’t said whether it was county employees or residents whose information may have been compromised.
Many services are still down. The East Roswell Library is open, but all the computers are out of service.

I bet that those computers also contain the voter registration database.
Wanna know what “scary” is? One of the big hospital and healthcare systems here in Texas (UTHealth) was brought down by a cyber attack, and it took them months to recover. It was a nightmare for the patients. Appointments were lost. No more online services for patients. Doctors couldn’t access patient records. Lab results lost. The patients like us who kept track of their appointments were the lucky ones. You couldn’t reach anyone by phone, because with the online system down, all anyone could do was call. And, the phone lines stayed busy.

To knock out evidence?
I’m a big fan of keeping paper records of medical and financial activity.
Might has to update that. I’ll be looking into it.
That’s pretty sweet. I might get that.

That’s why I have always been wary of the premise that all our medical records could be digitized and thus easily accessible to our physicians. That’s ignoring the fact that physicians and staff never look at them anyway. I always have to give them my history even if I just did so last week. Any disruption such as a cyperattack, long-term power outages, etc can make all that information instantly unavailable.
People say “Well, there is back-up paper copies”. Maybe there is, but you need a computer to find out where those documents are located. A hand search could take hours or even days (look how long it takes to obtain your medical records in a digitized world), and meanwhile patients in emergency situations, which you certainly would have in such an incident, would be dying.
On a side note, they lie when they say our information is secure. I received another notice this week from a physician’s office saying their system had been compromised. I already have a hold on my credit since I get one of those notices every few months, but eventually I’ll find that my information is on the dark web.
