House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) is in remission after completing cancer treatment and is expected to return to the House this week as lawmakers prepare for their second attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
Scalise is in “complete remission” nearly six months after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer, in August. The majority leader has been absent from the House over the last month to continue receiving treatment but announced last week he would be returning to Capitol Hill.
“Leader Scalise has successfully completed his autologous stem cell treatment and has been medically cleared to resume travel,” Scalise’s office said in a statement on Thursday. “He is in complete remission and will be returning to Washington next week for votes. He is thankful for his positive prognosis, and for the support of his medical team, family, colleagues, and fellow Louisianans.”
His return comes as lawmakers are set to reconvene on Tuesday and once again consider an impeachment resolution to charge Mayorkas with high crimes and misdemeanors over his handling of the southern border. That resolution is up for a vote as early as Tuesday, according to a whip notice sent to lawmakers last week.
Republicans have a slim three-seat majority that has become even more precarious with the majority leader’s leave over the last month. His absence was especially felt last week after Republicans failed to impeach Mayorkas due to a handful of GOP defections.

What will be the excuse this time?
They’ll find some other Republican to vote no on impeachment so that NO accountability can ever happen.
Even thought Mayorkas wouldn’t be convicted in the Senate (all the Republicans that voted to convict Trump will vote to acquit Mayorkas, you can see that coming a mile away), it would be good to see a trial in the Senate for his actions.
Yeah but you can hold public hearings in the house and compel him to appear and testify.
“Yeah but you can hold public hearings in the house and compel him to appear and testify.”
They’ve done that in spades. He doesn’t answer ANY questions. He just says “congressman...” and then obfuscates.
“The system is broken “
“We’re working hard...”
Over and over and over
I thought he went to Anderson for treatment.
One is not in treatment on Friday and in full remission on Monday.
The timeline seems fishy to me. Couldn’t / wouldn’t vote on the Mayorkas issue a few days ago, but today he’s perfectly OK? It’s a Christmas miracle! 🌲
Would his vote be enough or would it just cause a tie? Which I assume would be a fail.
They better not go to another vote unless they know it will pass.
The stem cell treatment first completely wipes out your bone marrow via high doses of chemo, then reboots it with your own stem cells, hopefully cancer free. While this goes on, you are completely without an immune system and subject to severe infection from any source. It’s no fun, and it takes months. Cut Scalise a bit of slack, please.
Democrats will get another vote tomorrow when Suozzi wins. Republicans are screwed because they don’t vote early and there will be a snowstorm on Election day.
A better use of their time would be to pass HR2 again with the border patrol funding from the Senate plan and pass it back to the Senate.
