Democrat insiders say it is now 'panic time' after a blockbuster Justice Department report concluded Joe Biden has 'diminished faculties' and is an 'elderly man with a poor memory'.
Increasingly, behind the scenes, a nuclear option is being considered to remove the 81-year-old president as the Democrat nominee at the party's convention in Chicago in August.
The leading candidates to replace him include California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
'I think it is now panic time. Biden should not be our standard bearer,' a former senior Democrat White House official, who worked with Biden, told Dailymail.com.
'He looked like a deer stuck in the headlights last night. There isn't enough gas in the tank for another four and-a-half years. Ultimately we're going to see more more prominent Democrats saying the quiet part out loud.
'It's increasingly clear we have a deeply flawed candidate. Democracy is in the balance and this is not a smart path for our party.'

RUN, JOE!!! RUN!!!!!
Stay in there!!!
I don’t know. I can see this going to the convention floor for a final decision. But I don’t think Biden is going to be the candidate on the November ballot.
The Carnahan Plan is almost certainly on the table.
No leading Democrat that works with Joe on a regular basis has ever publicly expressed any doubt about Joe’s fitness for office.
That includes all Joe’s cabinet officers, his Vice President and all the Democratic senators.
Joe is a bit forgetful. When you get to be Joe’s age it can happen.
If the Democrats pick Newsom as their standard bearer, the Republican attack ads will write themselves. They might be better off picking someone like Colorado governor Jared Polis, who is unknown outside the Buffalo Plains State but probably doesn’t carry nearly as much baggage as Newsom.
This is why I don’t think Joe can resign.
He wouldn’t remember the office or the country—and so couldn’t complete the resignation speech.
;-)
I remember Gerald Ford hit his head occasionally.
George Bush Jr. had lots of problems with English.
The news media is just looking for stories and the Democratic DoJ is just blowing up minor lapses in memory to try to get Joe off the hook.
Pinochet used the dementia defense too and lots of Chileans thought he should not have been able to.
Agreed. The Special Prosecutor did their Dirty Work for them. Joe just got kicked out of the Cool Kids Club, and whatever ‘campaign’ he had going is no more. Maybe another week or so until the dust settles. Harris started with the obligatory but feigned outrage, per the script. She’ll be moved into the position over the next few weeks as Joe fades away (under feeble, ineffectual, protest). Then (per my pessimistic crystal ball), the cackling hyena will announce that she is not running. Into that vacuum will step Newsome, who, along with some colored chick yet to be identified, will give Trump (if he remains the party’s candidate) a very serious run for his money. I see it ultimately being Newsome vs. the Indian woman with the obnoxiously nasal voice, with Mr. Vitalis (do they still make that stuff?) coming out on top.
Isn’t newsom Pelosi’s nephew?

There was a storyline in the Sopranos about an old mobster who tries to escape justice by claiming dementia.
We need to all rally behind “Grandpa Joe .” He was a bad man long before he became president and I think the dems should be forced to stick with him as a reminder of who they are. For all the world to see.
That's what I have heard too. She answers questions like a lawyer and she has said NO many times.
I think the Speaker of the House would become President if Joe retires and Harris is found disqualified.
The man I saw last night on TV was angry. Mad. Furious. And crazier than a caged ‘coon. He didn’t strike me as someone who would go quietly into the night. And he hates Harris and she hates him. This does not exactly portend a smooth transition.
The trouble is that Ivy League judges are afraid to, or just don’t want to, disqualify her.
Interesting items.
Here’s a funny anecdote. In the old days of magazines in print it often took around 4 months minimum for an issue to go from rough ideas to being shipped to newsstands. Writers had to pitch Christmas stories in June or so.
In Esquire they printed a confident putdown of silly current conspiracy stories. They derided the story of hidden elites in DC and said “So if that were true, which it isn’t, the elite would have found some way to get Agnew out of office. He represents the wrong side in the cowboys theory. And Agnew is still the Vice President today.
((Agnew had resigned on October 10, 1973 and readers holding the Esquire issue wondered if elites in DC really existed.))
This is the Royal Court of the Empire.
There are no rules.
Anything could happen—at any time.
If Biden decides to drop out, or is unable to continue being the candidate, all of the pledged delegates would be committed to him by name, or does his running mate inherit that?
The delegates are free if their specific named candidate is unavailable—both parties.
