70 current and ex-NYCHA workers cuffed in historic, decade-long $2M bribery and extortion bust

Seventy current and former NYCHA workers were busted Tuesday in a 10-year, $2 million pay-to-play corruption scheme involving the largest number of federal bribery charges brought in a single day in Department of Justice history.

The avalanche of bribery and extortion crimes occurred in about a third of the 335 developments in the New York Housing Authority — the country’s biggest public housing agency — when the suspects demanded cash in exchange for lucrative construction, maintenance and no-bid contracts, officials said.

The defendants, all of whom were working for NYCHA at the time, sought between 10% and 20% of the contracts’ values — or kickbacks of between $500 and $2,000 — though some asked for higher amounts, authorities said.

In total, the dozens of rogue workers received more than $2 million in bribes involving $13 million in contracts between 2013 and 2023, officials said.

I work for some of the area HA’s in my area.
What I do doesn’t pay enough to shovel money back to the people I deal with.

What is the purpose of the “Housing Authority”??
Why does any city need a “Housing Authority”??

When I moved and bought my houses, I just dealt with realtors and banks, there was no housing authority?
confused.

Not surprising. I used to work for a HA in upstate NY. Totally corrupt and would get busted every so often.

They “administer” gov’t subsidized housing programs via HUD such as Section 8 (which is a disaster)

New York Housing Authority

The housing authority is where politicians send failed corrupt politicians who still need patronage jobs. So it is indeed a corrupt organization from head to toe.

“when the suspects demanded cash in exchange for lucrative construction, maintenance and no-bid contracts, officials said.”

What’s the big deal? That’s just the normal way of doing business in any big democrat city. Just ask any business owner in Chicago.

Lots of large cities act as landlords to “the poor”. An obvious way of shoveling money to favored constituencies. More civil serpents sucking off the taxpayers teat, more beneficiaries doing the same, and just for good measure some opportunities for graft and patronage. Even if the contractors don’t kick back money directly to the civil serpents, you can bet the company winning the big money contracts are sure to “support” incumbent politicians. Big Time. (Ask Fanni Willis how “support” works.)

I thought the ten years was how long it took for the investigation. It’s how long the scheme has been going on.
