CHICAGO (WLS) -- A would-be robbery victim with a concealed carry license got into a shootout with a suspect on the Far North Side early Tuesday morning.
The 23-year-old man was walking in the 5400-block of North Winthrop Avenue in the city's Edgewater neighborhood just after 4:20 a.m., when a white sedan and dark-colored SUV approached, CPD said.
A male suspect got out of one of the cars, pulled out a gun and demanded the man give him his belongings, police said.
The victim, who has a Firearm Owners Identification card and CCL, also pulled out a gun, and there was a shootout, police said.
The man was not injured, and the suspect got back into the SUV empty-handed, according to police.
Both vehicles drove away, traveling south.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect was injured.
No one was in custody later Tuesday morning, and Area Three detectives are investigating.
Two other men were robbed at gunpoint during similar attacks that happened in less than an hour in Edgewater and West Ridge.
The first robbery occurred around 3:40 a.m. when two armed men approached a 45-year-old man inside a vehicle in the 2100-block of West Lunt Avenue and demanded his belongings, Chicago police said.
After the man complied, the robbers got into a silver SUV and sped away, police said.
About half an hour later, two gunmen exited separate vehicles in the 6100-block of North Wolcott Avenue and robbed a 29-year-old man sitting in his vehicle, police said.
Police are investigating the possibility the three attacks are linked.
Before the sanctimonious “Needs more range time” nonsense, the citizen did well. He prevented his possible death, put mortal fear into the ferals and went home safely. Great job.
True, but ...
It’s hard to CC a shotgun....
Who will get more jail time, the robber or the armed citizen? I’ve lived in Chicongo. I bet the armed citizen.
It has been over 25 years since I was in Chicago (on business trip). I would not even think about going there now.
That long ago, downtown Chicago, by the lake, was fairly safe in daytime. At night? It was a absolute No Go.
The vermin rule the night. Some of them die most nights.
“The victim, who has a Firearm Owners Identification card and CCL.”
Here in Illinois you must have an FOID in order to obtain a CCL. There is a single card now. It’s basically an FOID with a CCL endorsement. At least they made them expire at the same time. That wasn’t the case a couple of years ago.
Stupid, yes. But that sums just about everything the State of Illinois does anymore.

You just posted why the NFA rules for short barreled shotguns and rifles are archaic and racist. Not that I see anything through the race lens, but these gun restrictions come with congressional testimony we can still read and many contain fear of minorities having guns.
IMHO, there’s no better home/truck defensive weapon than a short barreled 12 or 20 gauge shotgun followed by a short barreled rifle.
“A male suspect”
That’s a hell of a description.....and we all know what that means.
Actually, believe it or not Chicago is very good about that as opposed to other shithole dem cities like New York. As long as you have the CCL/FOID you’ll skate. Only downside is the cops seize your gun and you’ll need an attorney to eventually get it back so don’t carry any prized pieces.
Seems like a lot of people are just sitting around in their vehicles in the wee hours of the morning......Probably amateur astronomers.
Agreed. Growing up in Southern Indiana in the “shadow of Chicago” I heard all my early life to stay out of Chicago, especially at night. This was back in the late 60’s early 70’s.
I visited Chicago once in the mid-seventies when I was a teenager. Went to Wrigley Field. A scary dump. I drove by an open air heroin market 2 blocks from the stadium. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough. That one trip to Chicago was enough for me.
For a few years, I went to Chicago 1 to 2 times per year. There was a wholesale buying group headquartered in Naperville that the company I worked for was a member.
Other times to National Hardware Show in Chicago. (it has all been transplanted to East Coast now.) Like CA it is very hard for a business to survive in either place.
Even the public has that problem, they are leaving in droves.

Doesn’t that get old?
He did the rest of society a great service
Vigilante?
Been to both Chicago and Detroit. Detroit is worse...

A friend who lived in Edgewater, Chicago was getting ready for work and let his dog out.
Dog goes wild! And has one of 0bama’s sons cowering in the bushes.
0bama jr told the cops he was thirsty and wanted to get a drink of water from the garden sprinkler.
Like most Chicago homes had a four-foot fence and locked gates.
He was cited for trespass.
He also sued my friend causing him way too many days in court.
My friend quickly retired out of state.
