The leading Asian American caucus in Congress has accused Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) of “racist” questioning of TikTok’s CEO at a congressional hearing this week.
In a hearing Wednesday, leaders from across big tech were summoned to testify on the issue of online child safety. In addition to TikTok, executives from Meta, X, Snap and Discord were accused by lawmakers of failing to protect children from online abuse and exploitation.
In the hearing, Cotton repeatedly asked TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew about possible ties to China. Chew repeatedly responded that he is Singaporean.
When Cotton asked if Chew had ever applied for Chinese citizenship, Chew said no, adding in what appeared to be growing frustration that he served in the Singaporean military for two years and holds a Singaporean passport. Chew confirmed his wife and children are both American citizens but he has not yet applied for American citizenship.
The senator then asked Chew if he has “ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party.”
”Senator, I’m Singaporean. No,” Chew responded.
“Have you ever been associated or affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party?” Cotton asked.
“No, senator. Again, I’m Singaporean,” Chew said.
Cotton proceeded to ask Chew about what happened in 1989 in Tiananmen Square.
“You said earlier, in response to a question, that what happened in Tiananmen Square in June of 1989 was a ‘massive protest,’” Cotton said. “Anything else happen in Tiananmen Square?”
“Yes, I think it’s well-documented, there was a massacre,” said Chew.

I see they are taking a different slant on the story........ Bada boomp!
Whenever you are exposed, scream “racism.”
The TikTok exec questioned is from Singapore and folks there are upset which is more important than what Democrats in Washington say IMHO.
But yes MIC tough talking Republican Senator Tom Cotton stuck his foot in the excrement with folks in the city-state economic powerhouse country of Singapore.
They may be 75 percent of them ethnically Chinese but Singaporeans are Capitalists not Chicoms.
Stay safe and avoid TikTok. Only use Facebook and Instagram.
This farce is the Zuckerberg protection hearings. TikTok is a superior product. Zuck called his paid for congressmen to demonize TikTok.
I general like a Tom Cotton, but he was imbecilic in his questioning.
That was a direct blow to the Chin.
They need to rename their organization: Gaysian American Caucus.
Cotton needed a better handle on who he was talking to the guy was from Singapore not Beijing.
TikTok is owned by a Chinese company. It probably does the bidding of the communist party and collects data and surveillance on the party’s behalf.
Get over yourselves.
Cotton then asked the Singaporean to apologize for bombing Hickam Field.
The senator then asked Chew if he has “ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party.”
Confusion with his hands over mic.
Cotton:”Is this the witness Xieng-Si?”
Aide: No, Senator, This is Chew.”
Cotton: “Ah, Chew.”
Aide: “Gezundheit.”
Chew lies.
Too many American politicians are ignorant on international matters.
Singapore is a capitalistic country; China is communist.
Singapore is a big supporter of China. He’s worked for more than one Chinese company, and is very secretive about his family, including his parents. Where are they from and why not be more forthright about them?
Pardon me, boy, is that the TikTok Shou Zi Chew-Chew (yass, yass...)
Mr. Chew never denied anything,. He just said he was "singaporean".
If cotton was more savvy, he would have mentioned this.
The "singaporean" is a chicom, and anyone with a brain knows it.
Everything is racist, eh? Mayb e masturbation is racist because it is all white. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that argument alongsie men menstruating.
I thought that all of your ticky Toky data went straight to the Chineese Communists.
