Breaking the law and barely surviving: Inside NYC’s cash-based migrant economy wreaking havoc on city revenue

With stiff, cold fingers, Sambeittou Sambeittou removed the neatly folded piece of cardboard he carries in his pocket like a wallet and treats like a precious jewel.

“I’m looking for carpenter jobs” is written in marker along with a phone number.

The 45-year-old huddled with other migrants from Africa at the entrance of a Lowe’s in Brooklyn, hoping for a few dollars in tips from customers loading drywall, lumber and insulation into their vehicles.

Sambeittou never learned to read and write in Mauritania, the West African country he left three months ago on a journey that took him through Senegal, Turkey, Nicaragua and Mexico.

I expect all those passing thru Mixico are “paying their way” all along the way. To cartels, for bribes, for food etc, perhaps needing clothing, for transportation. $Millions of extra pesos for ole Mexico.

“West African country??? EXCUSE ME?”

Hispanics aren’t reliable enough for the Democrats, so they’re now having our government fly Africans over to South America and then transporting them north.

Gee, I wonder why? Hmm, could raising rates on them so high be a reason? Nah!

Idiots.

I have a large collection of Cuban cigars (obtained pre Covid when prices were much more reasonable).

European vendors created huge warehouses and shipped the cigars around the world at very reasonable prices.

Since they were illegal in the US that meant there were no sales or excise taxes.

If they were legal in the US the prices would be astronomical and the taxes would be crazy.

Meanwhile Cuba is still a slave state after an eighty year boycott.

.Gov is just a big joke—work around them when the reward exceeds the risk.

Btw I never had a box seized by customs. In one hilarious case I had ordered a less well known name couple of boxes of Cubans. Customs opened up the packed box (from Switzerland) and put green customs tape inside the box and then retaped the box and wrapped green customs tape around it—and forwarded it to me.

Lol.

Kind of useless then to outlaw them.

Depending on the year this happened, you should be able to file a California Non-Resident tax return and get your money back. You shouldn’t have earned enough for the year to hit the income limits, even in crazy California.

You shouldn’t have earned enough for the year to hit the income limits, even in crazy California.

Since the zip code policy change, I've had many years where I had to file in ID, CA, NE due to being sent to provide support at remote sites. The NE visits were just long enough to trigger a state income tax collection. The cost to buy the NE TurboTax product was just covered by the money NE refunded. I cost me time and money. The CA visits and rates were significantly more, yet resulted in nearly full refunds...subject to taxation by ID.

The zip code policy has made me reticent to do any business travel. In addition, the travel office in the company has figured out how to deprive traveler's of per diem. They pay actuals and collect per diem. There is no longer any incentive to be frugal in travel arrangements to keep per diem above actual costs. You must use a the company credit card for all travel expenses and they pay the bill from the company office. Receipts for each expense must be uploaded. Travel has become more of a burden than an interesting part of working on a contract.
