Mother of Three Shoots Career Felon
Carroll County Sheriff's Office ^ | January 22, 2024 | Carroll County Sheriff's Office

Posted on 01/28/2024 4:09:22 AM PST by marktwain

On Monday, January 22, 2024, Carroll County Deputies responded to a call for help. The caller who was at work in Greenwood reported that a knife wielding man was attempting to enter his home in the Gravel Hill area of Carroll County. He further stated that his wife and three children were inside the home hiding in a closet. The caller identified the suspect and gave a description of the vehicle.

As deputies responded to the scene, they came upon a vehicle fitting that description. Deputies conducted a felony traffic stop in the parking lot of Acy’s Store, but the subject fled on foot into the busy store. Deputies pursued and subdued him inside the store.Carroll deputies arrested Steve Lamar Goss, Jr., age 42 of Greenwood, and discovered that he had a single gunshot wound to the arm. Deputies rendered medical aid until Medstat arrived. Goss, along with Carroll deputies, was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital where he was treated for his injuries. Goss was then booked into Carroll Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility on four counts of attempted murder and one count of burglary. Goss was already out on felony bond for possession of a weapon by a felon at the time of this incident.

While deputies were dealing with Goss at the store, other deputies continued to make their way to the residence of the original call. Upon arriving, they discovered that Goss had driven his 2500 GMC Pickup Truck into the dining room of the home after he had been unable to compromise the front door. The mother prayed and her children recited scripture even as they heard Goss kicking in the doors inside their home. He eventually found them hiding in the closet that was designated as the family’s safe room. The mother shot him as he entered the closet still holding the knife. Goss then fled the scene.

Sheriff Walker commended the father for having an emergency plan and preparing his wife and children for just such a situation. Walker said, “We can all learn a lot from this family about the importance of having an emergency plan in place in our homes and most importantly the power of prayer. I thank the Lord for this father’s preparation; the bravery shown by the mother and children, and that what could have been a tragedy was transformed into a testimony of their faith in God.”

This is a Carroll County Mississippi Sheriff's Department press release. It does not have a proper title.

Amazing. Thankfully the family had a plan. If it can happen to them, in Mississippi, we should be ready too, especially if like me you’re living in one of the bluest states that the political class loves their criminals.

Under the circumstances good shoot.

Could have been better with more range time, but which one of us wouldn’t be a bit shaky in this situation?

She ended the threat, what more could we ask?

Under pressure in a life-threatening situation, and she managed to hit him with a pistol shot, chasing him off

That is pretty good action on the mom’s part.

She did fine under the circumstances. It's hard to hit even a man-sized target with a short pistol barrel under extreme pressure.

She missed. Only hit him in the arm. Yeah, more range time needed.

From the story, it sounds like the family knew this guy.

"“We can all learn a lot from this family about the importance of having an emergency plan a gun in place in our homes"

Fixed for accuracy.

She only injured him, but now he will face trial & hopefully they will throw the book at him. Sounds as though the evidence is there.

My first thought was Carroll County, Ohio. Have friends there. Rural area. I suspect the outcome would have been similar.

Right. She should have finished him. He’ll be released Monday morning to menace some other family.
Now taxpayers have to pay for incarceration (if any) and court expenses.

I was afraid the mother would have been charged for shooting the guy. Glad this didn’t happen and that all were safe in the end.
