There’s a message there about putting the war behind us and learning to live together as one, as humans, not nationalities or races. And when Takei wasn’t available he swapped our Sulu for a Russian, thus making the same commentary about the cold war. Gene actually talked about a lot of this stuff 8n various interviews.
