One fall, after my hiking season ended, I stayed at a ranch where I worked for room and board. One of my main jobs was making dirt.
I would clean the stalls of hay and manure, the pastures of maure, and then place the material on top of an existing compost pile.
Willow bushes would be dispatched and run through a wood chipper. Finally, I would go into town and gather cardboard from a small dumpster behind the local McDonalds, and gather more cardboard from the town’s pharmacy.
A layered cake of alternating materials would be stacked one upon the other and each layer would be wet down by hand with a garden hose.
Periodically, a person using a front end loader would turn the pile.
In six months time the compost materials would be converted into some of the richest soil on the planet.
The project was funded by an outdoor installation artist in order to gift the townspeople enough soil to start a garden, encouraging them to grow nutritious food for themselves.
The point being, shopping at a grocery store is convenient, but if push comes to shove, it’s back to the basics, using the power of numbers by building coops to grow food with family and friends.
