Florida lawmakers advanced a bill on Wednesday that would prohibit social media platforms from allowing young teens to have an account while requiring everyone else to verify their age.

The measure prohibits anyone under 16 from creating a new social media account and requires platforms to delete existing accounts held by minors who are younger than 16. It also would require social media companies to delete any personal information from the accounts and for the platforms to use a “nongovernmental, independent, third-party not affiliated with the social media platform” to verify users’ age.

The bill passed the Florida house with a bipartisan 106-13 vote and now heads to the Republican-controlled senate.

Explain why? Both are communicated a message, while all pron is a bad message much ( I would argue most) social media promotes a very bad message for minors.

I challenge you to show how I made a false equivalence. Don’t just argue through assertion, defend your assertion.

“Legislation is no substitute for parenting.”

So, we can sell your 10 year old cigarettes, pot, guns, a car, etc.

You are claiming children are no different than adults because “good parenting” will protect them.

I agree laws against an unenforceable action are foolish. This can be enforced, like require age limits from the platform owner, not perfect but there are ways to limit such access.

We do it with pron, or do you think pron laws are equally silly since a child can always end up looking at his friend’s father’s personal playboy collection?

“I 100% support this but somehow I think the courts will twist and turn and decide children have more rights than voting adult citizens.”

So you think EVERY person who wants to register with any and all platforms must show certified identification of their real selves? Are you kidding? This is not at all about children, this is all about positively identifying every user on the internet by real name and attaching content to them.

And if you actually think they are going to destroy the data after they verify it then I have a bridge to sell you. They will SELL this information without your permission just like they already secretly do now. And to them “social media” means EVERY WEBSITE on the internet.

And their first customer will be to a government database. They will be data mining on EVERYONE while hiding behind children. Supporting this is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. This is Nikki Haley caliber stupidity here... It will DESTROY the internet all together.

Absolutely it is the parents job.

There is no reason though to not help parents by giving them more power to hold social media providers accountable and tools to prevent access to such things.

I use no social media unless you count FR or other such BBs as such. This issue is powerfully hard to manage as you demonstrate din your post. That does not mean we ignore it and do nothing.

Children need to not be on social media, my actual preference would to be banning apps like toctok and others, they are poison imo.

Kids are very clever and smart with computers. They can do things we are as a whole clueless about.

All your well meaning, and emotional, ideas do is strengthen data gathered on everyone including children.
The idea you can stop children from seeing porn with laws is comical.
Same for social media. How would they validate?
Your children are your responsibility, not the state’s.
How can you still have any trust or faith in government?
Same applies for big tech.

Unfortuanely, this bill would stop me from using ANY social media. I live in Florida.

I want my anonymity. If f/b requires me to ID myself, I AM GONE.

They are not smart, kids just learn fast specifically because of their age. I am 60 and assure you no child expect some rare prodigy savant knows more about computers than me.

Regardless I prefer overall good parenting over and legislature activities but do see social media as it is available now very similar to pron and it needs more than just “good parents” to keep the children safe.

Access is to easy and hard to control, the right legislation can encourage a better management of social media and hold bad companies accountable.

Now I do not know if the Fl bill is good legislation, all I am saying is I think there is the potential for effective legislation and unless someone has a better idea than expect parents to do it all alone, what would you do?

I rent an apartment. I do not want drive-by’s so I don’t post an address and f/b doesn’t know where I am ‘xcept for an IP address. Florida will make this end for me.

I have little faith in any government but also try to live in the real world. We all have to make due with the society we live in.

You seem to support anarchy, seems you believe there should be no laws or government?

We all are imperfect, all government is a horrible imperfect solution for imperfect people.

Some governments are less horrible and some laws are less egregious, this is realty, we have to try and live in it.

“I use no social media unless you count FR or other such BBs as such.”

Don’t you understand that EVERYTHING but internet market places is now defined as “social media”???

This includes all sites like the FR and any other forum, blog, and all interactive websites. And because of the Florida rule the websites will just apply it across the board as “one size fits all” requirement even if you are NOT in Florida. Then it will spread across the whole internet and destroy it.

And... It will not stop there, this concept will spread to EVERY website on the internet just like Nikki Haley wanted. It is dumber than dumb to trust this scam. May as well just go hand unknown criminals your real identification so they can steal your identity.

I stated a few posts ago I did not know if the Fl law was the right way of doing it, just that I do support legislation (similar to banning minors from pron) for social media.
