Critics cry foul as Hochul appoints daughter of gambling lobbyist to NY gaming oversight board

Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed the daughter of a veteran gambling lobbyist to the state board that regulates the industry — raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest from government watchdogs, The Post has learned.

Marissa Shorenstein — who served as head of Hochul’s transition team when she became governor — was tapped as commissioner on the New York Gaming Commission despite her dad’s clients including some with business before the board, public records show.

Stuart Shorenstein has long been an active lobbyist and adviser to gaming firms, and is currently listed as repping the Swedish internet gambling giant Evolution Malta, which is pushing to legalize online betting in New York.

You know how far down the toilet we, as a nation, have fallen by the public displays of corruption. The individuals involved fear nothing with regard to consequences of their malfeasance as the agencies responsible for enforcing and prosecuting our laws are just as corrupt if not more so. Only radical surgery can rid us of this metastasized malignancy.

This has been around for a long time. Economists call it industry capture and it pretty much occurs any time there is a regulatory board to oversee an industry. The board needs to have people knowledgeable of the industry and where do you find them? Predominately, in the industry that is being regulated. Sometimes the capture is quick like in this case and sometimes it takes a while but it is inevitable. I'm also certain that a very, very shallow scratch across the surface of this regulatory board will reveal organized crime connections.

Is this particular appointment a poor one? In all likelihood because Hochul made it. Is it a corrupt appointment? Same answer.
