Russia Accuses US of Giving Ukraine 'Old Junk' Weapons
Newsweek ^ | 1/22/2024 | Jon Jackson

Posted on 01/22/2024 4:27:24 PM PST by marcusmaximus

While speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York City on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the United States of providing Ukraine with "old junk" weapons while building up its military complex.

In November, The Washington Post reported that of the $68 billion in military aid Congress approved for Ukraine, nearly 90 percent went back to the U.S. to build new weapons or replace ones sent to Ukraine from American stockpiles. The Post wrote that a Ukrainian official said "every single state in the U.S. contributes to this effort," thus creating more American jobs.

The Russian state news agency Sputnik said Lavrov cited the 90 percent figure to the UN Security Council, but he also claimed without offering evidence that the U.S. is updating its weapons with assistance funds for Kyiv while its "old ancient junk is being used in Ukraine."

The top Russian diplomat said the U.S. is treating the conflict in Ukraine "not as a war that has already claimed hundreds of thousands of lives...but as a profitable business project."

“Ukraine is STILL able to hold off former-superpower Russia for 2 years now!

“That’s even more impressive!!”

Putin has long wanted to rebuild the Soviet Union. To get that done surely means not destroying most of Ukraine. His dream probably is now impossible after three decades of Ukrainian independence, but the dream probably endures within Putin.

So a CIA planted story about Chinese intelligence assessments of Russian missiles is what you’re going with.

Hmhmmmm.

deployed hypersonic missiles, right

I'm not so sure what deploy means and seriously doubt Ivan actually has anything beyond some kind of prototype. They don't even have a navy and their single Aircraft Carrier is a POS.

80 years of history shows if Ivan can't copy it, he won't get it.

Hypersonic simply means Mach 2 or Mach 3 jets can’t chase after it and shoot it down.

Based on a missile course, there might only be one possible target. That makes to possible to reliably predict where the hypersonic missile will be so it can get intercepted.

I see, you are one of those who just ignores information on the war that doesn’t fit your fantasy as totally made up.

That must be a strange thing as we come up on the 2-year anniversary of Russia bogged down in what has turned out to be the bloodiest European War since WWII, Russia’s bloodiest War since WWII, and it is Ukraine doing it to them.

You need to let Members of Congress know. Because they are all worried about defence against weapons you claim don’t exist.

No, but I did see the Patriot shoot 32 missiles [at $3mil a pop] at one, all missed, and then the Patriot got blown up.

Seriously confuses CGI on his gaming computer with reality. The drugs probably helped.

Your post simply says the obvious and the routine, Congress wants a lot of defensive systems development to accelerate, including for new missile systems being developed against us.

It would also save a lot of time if you would not lie about what posters are saying, much less “claiming”.

Wasn’t it mostly the old cluster artillery shells that Trump kept from being destroyed, and some bombs and missiles?

“The Defense Department had been due by 2019 to stop use of any cluster munitions with a rate of unexploded ordnance greater than 1%. But the Trump administration rolled back that policy, allowing commanders to approve use of such munitions.”

The Trump administration cancels a plan to curtail the use of cluster bombs
November 30, 2017
“The policy change, which reverses a 2008 decision by the George W. Bush administration”

“The 2008 policy would have banned the use of all cluster munitions that have an unexploded ordnance rate above 1 percent. Going forward, the U.S. military will be allowed to buy cluster bombs that don’t meet that standard, so long as they have “advanced safety features” such as self-destruct mechanisms that would kick in after they are dropped.

This is what MeganC claims on every thread. That these are expired weapons that the USA is saving the disposal fee.

Now Putin says the same, and it is huge disinformation and Russian “lies”.

Don’t really get that post since it is inaccurate but are you pleased or disappointed that we are using up old stock that was mostly to fight Russia and saving money on disposal by sending it to Ukraine for them to use it up fighting Russia and saving us money destroying the old stuff while making room for the new?

A lot of this stuff is equipment the US military no longer uses. A lot of the light armor like M113s, MRAPS and the like, the M777 field guns the Marines abandoned, the cluster munitions, as noted, etc. You can even add the Bradley’s and Abrams as the US holds stocks of these far above requirements. Stinger SAMs are also technically obsolete, but the US never adopted a replacement. US supplies of 155mm ammo probably included the oldest batches first, on the FIFO principle.

The imputed value of all this should, in a rational pricing system, be zero or close to it, counting disposal costs.

On the other hand, it is all useful. The US armed many nations in the Cold War with US surplus. That’s how so many countries ended up with F86 Sabres and M47-48 tanks.

And

Of course, we and other European nations have given Ukraine old weapons. It was old weapons or nothing. NATO countries don't have the manufacturing capacity to keep up with Russians.
