Ron DeSantis had given up on New Hampshire, turning his campaign towards the more conservative state of South Carolina.
But on Saturday, he was given internal polling data that showed he had no chance of winning the state and would finish far behind former President Donald Trump, according to two sources familiar with discussions.
His aides canceled appearances on the Sunday morning shows as they debated what to do next.
And on Sunday afternoon, the Florida governor formally pulled the plug on his 2024 campaign.
'I can't ask our supporters to volunteer their time and donate their resources, if we don't have a clear path to victory,' he said.
The decision took donors and staff at a super PAC backing DeSantis by surprise.
They were traveling to New Hampshire as part of the last push before voters in the state made their decision.
But his prospects there were bleak.
A poll published Sunday morning found he was on course for just six percent of the vote, behind Trump on 50 percent and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley on 39 points.
He was already digesting difficult numbers from South Carolina, where he had hoped to get his campaign back on track and where he campaigned at the weekend.
'I think that was the reason for the timing,' said a source familiar with discussions.
A second source close to the DeSantis camp told DailyMail.com: 'They were struggling to explain what the path to the nomination would even look like. That's how bad things were.'
The announcement came hours after Trump had delivered his own South Carolina show of strength.

Something he should have done months ago and retained a modicum of dignity.
Personally, I would have wholeheartedly supported DeSantis. I think he would be a fine president. But President Trump just sucks all the air out of the campaign. DeSantis will learn from this experience and he is certainly young enough that another run is inevitable.
Cut out the “Rhonda Santis” crap. That’s hitting way below the belt. Try being an adult. You might actually like it.
The guy always looked uncomfortable, irritated, and just unpleasant to be around.
I sense his wife Jill made many of the decisions; where to go, what to say, what to wear, who to work with, etc. People picked up on the lack of confidence.
He needs to figure out how to lead and be his own man, be an authentic leader.
Defending a RINO Establishmentarian is crap.
Thanks for outing yourself, Rhonda.
I’m a Never Nimmy.
I am very uncomfortable when wives push their husbands into politics. It's like they want public office more than their husbands do and that's disturbing. Take Hillary for instance. Or Tipper Gore. Or Jill Biden.
That's why I really respect Melania Trump. She could not care less if her husband ran for president or not. She'll support him either way. I find that refreshing.
All Slick Willy wanted to do was to chase tail. But Hillary helped him to become a skilled politican. They were a good team.
Hillary ran for President in '16. We saw what happened.
Looks like Haley will lose the SC primary too but her investors want to get their money’s worth. Maybe this is entertainment for them.
I am glad this is DeSantis final term as governor. I donโt know if he could win another term here. I pray he comes back and starts to get Floridas insurance messes cleaned up. And Ron, kick out the illegals here, please.
I think Trump will have a problem finding any serious, qualified candidates willing to take positions in his administration after seeing how people in his last administration were treated and what happened to the professionally after they left office.
You have it entirely backwards. The issue is not how Trump treated members of his last administration, but how they treated him. Did they do the job Trump hired them to do? Where they loyal to him and the agenda he was elected to implement or did they instead, stab him in the back, try to implement their own agenda, leak to the press and generally fail to perform the duties they were hired to fulfill? The problem was clearly the ladder. Those that were loyal were treated just fine. Those who weren’t (e.g. Bill Barr) weren’t.
It’s going to be Abbott.
Trump will make the border front and center.
My guess.
We’ll see how it goes. Thanks for the response.
I do hope Florida can loft another figure that will work
well with their Legislature.
We need to keep both the Executive and the Legislative
branches safe down there.
Ron had about as bad of a team and strategy as was possible. Most saw the writing on the wall long ago.
Bet the rinos had a lot to do with this, they want thier girl. Now that he is out of the way she moves to #2
Mine as well
“One somewhat outlandish candidate could be Peter Navarro.”
Or Mark Levin.
