The state is reportedly planning to dramatically downsize or even close SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn.

The Big Apple’s only state-run medical hospital has been plagued by low patient enrollment, annual operating deficits of about $100 million and a deteriorating hospital building – information administrators shared this week with staff doctors, the New York Times reported Saturday.

However, a union representing health care workers at SUNY Downstate isn’t buying it.

“Let’s call this what it is: SUNY is closing Downstate,” said Frederick Kowal president of United University Professions. He added that the plan “will undoubtedly harm the health of the Central Brooklyn community.”

No discussion of solving the problem.

The Big Apple's only state-run medical hospital has been plagued by low patient enrollment, annual operating deficits of about $100 million and a deteriorating hospital building – information administrators shared this week with staff doctors, the New York Times reported Saturday.

The East Flatbush medical center is across the street from city-run Kings County Hospital, so the changes would not leave central Brooklyn without a hospital.

Why low patient enrollment?

Better management across the street?

hospital has been plagued by low patient enrollment

NYC alone can fill that hospital as opposed to giving bench tickets and no bail for the crazies.

Not to worry, when Disease X is released in a couple months and the PCR tests pick it up in trace amounts in even the people who go to the ER for cutting their finger cutting vegetables, this hospital can get 100k per patient for putting them on a ventilator and Redemsivir.

My guess is that poor quality care led to low patient enrollment. I have seen the same thing several times, with a minority-staffed hospital “saved” after it goes broke only to be closed later because of too many problems to fix.

Sounds like a perfect candidate for a “migrants” hospital. Could bus those sickly unvaccinated migrants from the overwhelmed city hospitals to this underused hospital. You’ve got to learn to think outside the box Eric!

Sounds like a good idea. Having n underutilized hospital amid all the complaints about overwhelmed hospitals sounds peculiar.
