At least one person has died in violent unrest and riots in Papua New Guinea's capital of Port Moresby.
Local media are reporting that the death toll from the unrest could be up to five at this stage, but ABC has only confirmed that one person has died.
Paramedics responded to multiple call-outs last night involving severed burns and gunshot wounds, with St. John Ambulance describing it as a "significant emergency situation".
Local security services described the rioting overnight as total anarchy.
Videos of the unrest showed warehouses engulfed in flames and large crowds of people engaging in looting and rioting.,
On Wednesday, police, defence and other public servants held a peaceful demonstration at Parliament House over a payroll issue.
But it soon escalated...

Taxes taken out of police and military pay caused some of them to walk off the job unleashing the mayhem which happened today and tonight their time.

Considering it’s one of the most violent cities in the world, why is this news?
Nothing new, people there are known for losing their heads and getting eaten up with hostility and anger.
A little more violent than usual I guess but they taxed government workers and the cops and military to some extent went on strike leading to this.
Why can’t they learn to get along like us white folks?

I’m pretty sure PNG and Port Moresby especially is West Africa violent without any safe zones.

I was talking with a woman who made a few business trips to PNG. Car meets you at the airport, armed guards, stop for nothing.
