Prices in the U.S. have been rising across the board, but the increase in airfares has been particularly acute. Part of that is due to a significant pilot shortage. A new report from the Oliver Wyman consulting firm finds that North America has about 90,000 pilots, falling approximately 8,000 pilots short of demand. And the problem is only getting worse, projected to rise to a shortage of 30,000 pilots over the next decade.
We can blame three coalescing events: regulatory changes enacted under President Obama, vaccine mandates, and forced pilot retirements as airlines scrambled to stay afloat during the pandemic. . . .

Have a friend whose husband was a pilot.
65. you’re out.
No physical or mental testing. 65 ends your employment
Wish that applied to congress and up.
Blame the government and regulations for everything that is wrong with the country.
You’ll be right 99.9999% of the time.
I understand.
Taking an air bus is overrated.
If you want to get to someplace on the Continent on time with a buncha your stuff, drive.
I have a shooting buddy who was a commercial pilot (also Air Guard fighter pilot) who hit 65 and was retired. He missed the flying but not the increasing BS. Flew international routes, mostly to South and Central America. He used to bring back the most amazing coffee.

10-4, as a semi retired trucker, that’s what I told my wife before we flew in the airborne cattle cars (at her insistance) to see her brother in norcal two years ago. We had cancellations both ways. She says no more airports.
I told her I could have her there in 2 days from south central TN, and see a lot of country. I still know how to get in the ‘zone’ and roll for hours and remain alert. No coffee or pills (that wear off, leaving the body more tired than if those things had not been used). No big meals either. You don’t burn a lot of calories just sitting at the wheel.
I have no problem with an old pilot in the cockpit over 65, with this proviso, I want the second pilot under 55.
“Time to spare? Go by air!” A friend who was a private pilot used to say that.
Drive EVs across country -great for our fragile climate.(/S)
How often has government intervention in the free market resulted in lower prices?
