Ohio’s governor vetoed a bill Friday that would have restricted both transition-related care for minors and transgender girls’ participation on school sports teams.
Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto makes him one of only two Republican governors to veto a restriction on gender-affirming care, alongside Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson in 2021, and one of only three Republican governors to veto a trans athlete bill after Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb last year.
In a press conference on Friday following his veto, DeWine said the “gut-wrenching” decision about whether a minor should have access to gender-affirming care “should not be made by the government, should not be made by the state of Ohio,” rather it should be made by the child’s parents and doctors.
Prior to vetoing the bill, DeWine told The Associated Press that he visited three Ohio children’s hospitals to learn more about transition-related care and spoke to families who were both helped and harmed by it.
“We’re dealing with children who are going through a challenging time, families that are going through a challenging time,” he said. “I want, the best I can, to get it right.”
The Ohio General Assembly, which is controlled by a Republican supermajority, can override the governor’s veto with a three-fifths majority vote.

With “Republicans” like this, who needs Democrats?
It would be a lot less challenging if Governor Dewine stayed out of medical issues that he obviously knows little about .
He’s with Satan.
By 2028 the official platform of the GOP will be "Democrats are the real Transphobes!"
You can stay home on election night or take them out in the primaries. Just be careful and keep November in mind on the primary date.
Yet OH re-elected this tool. What a worthless piece of $hit he is!
Override it with the legislature and impeach him following referral to AG David Yost
LOL !
Way to go, Ohio.
DeWine validating the my opinion that the Republican party is worthless and full of clueless cowards and fools. It should be renamed the Junior Democrat party.
Does the R super majority have the will to override?
These mutilated children, who will be incapable of reproduction or normal sexual function, will one day grow up into very depressed and dysfunctional adults. When they go out looking to take revenge on those who allowed them to become victims, they can add one more name to that list.
Hopefully they will properly recognize their parents, their teachers, their councilors, their doctors and now their Government officials when they start their revenge tour.
I live in Georgia now and I a very active in our state politics. I was instrumental in getting a 1% sales tax voted down. Just check my FR Bio history to see all that I have been involved in.
Chris Christie agrees with this position.
For whatever reason, some Republicans want to go out of their way to show that they are liberal , on certain big social issues. They want to show that they are a so-called reasonable Republican , as opposed to the evil irredeemable MAGA types.
It is astonishing how much power such a small group wields over corporations and politicians. Homosexuals do not have the numbers to do anything more than yell really loud, but so much of society bows in front of them.
Just as I predicted.
Will this be overridden?
DeWine is Deep State.
Why have any laws protecting minors at all? By his logic if a minor’s parents believe their child is ready to be sexually active at the age of 10 and the family doctor can find no reason it would be physically unsafe then it would be none of the government’s business to forbid it. We could add to that list such things as
Driving a car.
Age of marriage.
Consumption of alcohol.
Years of compulsory schooling.
What type of work is prohibited.
Oh the list goes on and on.
We have seen that the Republican Party is still full of RINOs and hasn’t changed this year. You have a few GOP governors vetoing this legislation or the GOP voting down Jim Jordan for Speaker, not voting to fine Adam Schiff, a few voting against impeaching Mayorkas, voting to fund new FBI headquarters.
