Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley on Thursday blamed a “Democrat plant” for a question about what caused the Civil War. The presidential candidate neglected to include “slavery” in her list of reasons.
During a town hall on Wednesday, a member of the audience asked the former South Carolina governor what caused the Civil War. She gave an unclear word-salad response.
“I mean, I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do,” she said.
“I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are,” Haley continued. “I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people,” she said.

Going to go out on a limb here and without reading everyone elses' posts, this is the correct answer.
Just how much American History do you think she got as a child? Ask a recent school student who the first Republican President was. Actually, don’t even go that far back. Ask a recent student who America fought in WW II. What younger people don’t know about American history could ...... well, fill a book. Or two. Or 1,000.
Haley is not only clueless about American history, but she is clueless about the history of the Republican party.
And she apparently didn't know that the civil war started because South Carolina seceded from the Union. Laws about slavery were certainly an issue, but that issued had existed for many years without the outbreak of war.
Well the **** got confused and started speaking out of school about the next CW, instead of the last one?
Democrats started the first CW and will most assuredly start the next one as well.
She would have made me happy :) if she’d said that the Civil War happened because Democrats wanted to keep their slaves.
“word salad” does not begin to describe it.
Not only that, in politics you have to be prepared for all possible “gotcha” questions no matter who asks them.

She was probably worried about offending people who say the Civil War was not about slavery but about states' rights and she was trying to keep every possible voter.
Republicans have no problem with slavery and secession? Weird times.
The Unionists fought for many reasons. The secessionists fought for one: the preservation of the institution of slavery.
Actually, I seem to recall that McClellan nearly outpolled Lincoln in popular votes but got very few electoral votes.
If you're talking about newspaper polls, it sounds like the lame stream media of 1864 was as bad at conducting Presidential polls as they are today.

I attended a Lincoln Symposium at Ford's Theater many years ago. One of the speakers gave a talk on Lincoln's memo that he had penned before the election, where he was convinced that he wouldn't be re-elected. I had never heard of it until that time, despite having read many books on Lincoln long before I attended the symposium. The memo is discussed in this article.
Haley’s explanation is worse than her original answer.
Her original answer was evocative of the ending of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. At the end, Lincoln asks if government of, by and for the people should perish from the earth. This seems to align with Haley’s original answer that the Civil War was about our form of government.
But, also in the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln said the outcome of the war would decide whether a government dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal could long endure, a reference not just to slavery, but also to any form of subordinated status. And, just before the end, Lincoln asked whether this country would have a new birth of freedom, in context, a reference to freeing the slaves.
Her answer was almost Kamala-esque.

If you look at the Debates on the amendment in congress the meaning of the words in the amendment are clear.
However judges did not take long at all to pervert the 14th for their own purposes.
United States v. Wong Kim Ark was decided in 1898 giving birthright citizenship in-spite of the fact that it was specifically excluded during the debates on the amendment.
The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868. So it only took 30 years for the courts to forget what the amendment was intended to do and pervert if to their own uses and they have been doing it ever since.
