California has the largest number of LGBTQ Americans, according to new research, while Washington, D.C., has the greatest percentage of LGBTQ residents and the South claims a larger share of LGBTQ adults than any other region.
A report published by the Williams Institute at the University of California Los Angeles found an estimated 5.5 percent of U.S. adults, or about 13.9 million individuals, identify as LGBTQ, based off data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2021-2022.
About 14.3 percent of D.C.’s population identifies as LGBTQ, while Oregon and Delaware, coming in at second and third, respectively, have LGBTQ populations of 7.8 and 7.5 percent.
Vermont and New Hampshire are close behind — 7.4 and 7.2 percent, respectively, followed by Washington state at 6.9 percent and Colorado and Maine, where LGBTQ residents accounted for 6.8 percent of each state’s population.
California, the largest state by population, has the most LGBTQ residents — 1,549,600 — followed by Texas, with 1,071,300 and Florida with 898,000. New York is close behind with 853,600 residents before the number drops to 586,500 in Pennsylvania, followed by 557,600 in Ohio. The top 10 is rounded out by Michigan, Illinois, Georgia and Washington.
Nearly 36 percent of LGBTQ Americans live in the South, which researchers defined as stretching from Texas and Oklahoma to Florida and north through Delaware. Kentucky, West Virginia, and D.C. are also included, per USA Today.
The Midwest holds 21.1 percent of LGBTQ Americans, while the Northeast has 18.5 percent.
The report separately found young adults — ages 18 to 24 — take up the largest share of LGBTQ Americans, at 15.2 percent. That’s equal to nearly one in six young adults in the U.S., or about 4,659,600 individuals.

Yep! And I wouldn't be surprised if he glows in the dark.
Arrogant little SOB, he was. He'll probably be back again, sigh.
California has the largest number of LGBTQ.
No questions why it operated like it is got it’s name shithole for a reason.
Oh, amazing. The states with the largest populations and major cities have the largest population of special folks (eyeroll)... Philadelphia and New York City certainly tip the ship.
As for the South having the greatest percentage by region, somebody in most southern communities being gay always been part of the drama. The drawl and the romance of Southern decadent high society before the “Woah of Narthen Aggression” is part of the theater of it all—Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Tallulah Bankhead, etc.
Of course, finding that the largest population of gays is in DC (shocker!!), the statisticians threw that city into the "South" basket. It was once a "sleepy Southern town", but hasn't been since the FDR administration.
Either there actually are more in the South, or there merely are more who are willing to admit it.
I subscribe to the ‘Gallagher theory of California’:
“California is like a bowl of granola...what ain’t fruits and nuts is flakes.”

(Any FReeper Californians excepted, of course)
They die younger.
Also, in the past, statisticians found that many grew out of it by 25 or so. They finally got over being teased or bullied, found someone of the opposite sex who appreciated them, and put it all or mostly in the past.
Having worked in the arts, I knew dozens of men and women who went down that path, including around 20% who eventually veered back to their created purpose, married a hetero partner and had children. More than one asked me never to tell anyone in the school community about their past. That went without saying with me—I was just glad to see them "straighten" out whatever had sent them off road for awhile; in some cases it had been the death of the opposite sex parent in childhood, or having been sexually abused. Time or therapy helped several leave it behind. Others scurried away from it when the AIDS epidemic hit in the 80s.
It's not a life sentence for many. The key is unraveling whatever pushed them into it, and finding a healing counselor or community. Naturally, the activists have made counseling against the law now.
Brainwashing works.
That is why the elites do it.
Give me a decade of 24/7 mass media propaganda and I will have a generation of young people believing they are Unicorns—and a pile of academic papers proving it.
Mmmm, smell the ozone...
Happy New Year, everyone!
Sigh. I’m late to the Zot.
Ironically Eastern California is a lot like Texas.
Sadly their voting is dominated by Dem run cesspools such as LA, SF, and Sacramento.
So a lost cause. 😔
Quite a few major queer pop towns in Dixie
Nashville
Miami
Atlanta
Dallas
Austin
New Orleans
Pensacola (yes)
Houston
Asheville
Charleston
Tampa
Key West
Pensacola — that is a surprise! Nevertheless, I’m still suspicious of whatever way they counted the “votes”. Just more dunking on the South, IMO.
I love that whole series. 😂

GOOD!
I have long said Seattle has the highest per capita population of Lesbians in America.
Due in part, no doubt, to hiking boots and flannel shirts being mainstream clothing items for women already.
People conflate the south with a preponderance of Capotes and Tennessee Williams sorts I reckon
Only fairly sure thing is queers in Deep South are usually quieter and often private about it
When I was young they often led dual existence
Send the wives on shopping sprees and round up twinks for their orgies
Few southern towns lacked this element which everyone knew about but none confronted
Murfreesboro TN had a book written on it by a Dismukes lady who was general MacArthurs niece
She didn’t name names but folks knew
Jackson Miss where I grew up was similar
Quiet hushed tones but folks knew
I bagged groceries sunflower grocery in north Jackson 72-74 and the queer households tipped best
They’d have lavish early parties at their large well appointed homes and invite me and the prettiest gals too
Id go with the girls
Great food
The wierd stuff would start later after we normies had left
A very amusing summary! That's how it was in the old days in Philadelphia, discreet, before Stonewall, after which all LGBT's expect one another to be out and militant. Many of the gay guys who worked on houses lived in decrepit mansions that they were fixing up. They would have the fabulous dinner parties, especially the ones who were florists, or the ones who also restored keyboard instruments. Dinner by harpsichord, pianoforte or pipe organ! Like you said, they tended to their other organ business after all the straights left.
When I was a young single woman, I bought a fixer-upper and used mostly gay guys to restore it. They were fun, very creative, and didn't make passes when I was up on a ladder or whatever. They knew the classical construction with lath and plaster, wooden joists and floors, copper and brass fittings. Strong like men but fussy about details like women. Good times!
