City of Strikes: Eiffel Tower Shut to Tourists as Workers Walk Off Job

PARIS (AP) – The Eiffel Tower was closed to visitors Wednesday because of a strike over contract negotiations timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the death of its creator, Gustave Eiffel.
One of the world’s most-visited sites, the Eiffel Tower is typically open 365 days a year – though it is occasionally affected by strikes – and is expected to play a central role in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Some tourists were visibly dismayed upon seeing a big sign beneath its iron façade announcing the closure in multiple languages, and apologizing for the inconvenience. Others took photos anyway, or rearranged their Paris plans.

If I ever had an expensive vacation ruined by a strike at a prominent landmark like the Eiffel Tower, I’d never visit the stupid place again for as long as I live.

That tower was built on the promise it would be torn down after the fair ended. Up until that tower was built the tallest man made object was the pyramids. Perhaps that is why the French decided to keep it. I'm glad there was no strike at the time I visited it.

While flying I try to get the window seat because I love looking down on the world below. Me too!
BUT I get queasy looking out a building's window, or over a drop-off.
As long as I'm not connected to the ground, I'm OK.

We were in Rome and had an 11 PM train to Sicily. The cab driver said there is a strike. It was sunday night., I asked do we know how long the strike will last. He said when the futbol match with Greece is over. 10:30 the workers were back and the trains running.

IIRC most french work 36 hours a week My friends in Mulhouse in the east work in Switzerland because they get 40 hours and thus more pay.
